Distribution and description

It is found almost everywhere in the modern parts of Gondwana . About half of the species (more than 20) were found in South and Central America (Mari Mutt & Bellinger, 1990) [3] , 11 species in Australia (Greenslade, 1994) [4] , 6 in New Zealand, 2 in the southern Atlantic islands and 1 species - on acute Java ( Indonesia ). In Africa and Europe are absent. Small rounded collembolas , many types of bright and variegated coloring. Katianna differs about the genus Sminthurinus Börner, 1901 by the presence of 2 + 2 or 3 + 3 large spines on the postocular lobes, while in the species Sminthurinus spp. thinner sets are characteristic [1] [5] [6] . Head with thickened or long setae. Retinaculum with 4 + 4 teeth. 3rd segment of antennae with papilla, and 4th segment divided or ringed. 6th abdominal segment in females with pointed seta a0; the lower part of the head without a spur (a close genus Neokatianna has it , and their set a0 is forked) [7] [8] .

Systematics

One of the largest genera of the family, includes about 50 species (more only in the genus Sminthurinus , 90). The genus was first isolated in 1906 by the German entomologist Karl Burner (1880-1953) [1] .
