Ship Description

Sailing schooner , one of the five schooners of the same type. According to various sources, the length of the schooner ranged from 30.2 to 30.3 meters , a width of 7.8 meters , and a draft of 4 meters . The armament of the vessel consisted of two 3-pound cast-iron cannons and fourteen 18-pound carronades [1] [2] .

Service History

The schooner "Messenger" was laid in Nikolaev on September 12, 1833, and after launching on May 12, 1835, it became part of the Black Sea Fleet . The construction was carried out by shipbuilder V. Karachurin.

In 1835 and 1836, the schooner was at the disposal of the Russian mission in Greece . During the years 1837-1847 annually took part in operations off the coast of the Caucasus as part of detachments.

On June 7, 1837, as part of Rear Admiral S.A. Esmont’s squadron, took part in the landing on Cape Adler, and on July 10, 1838, as part of Rear Admiral S.P. Khrushchov’s squadron, at the mouth of the Shapsuho River .

On April 11, 1846, in the Sochi region, she detained a smuggling department . From 1851 to 1853 she carried a fire station in Kerch .

In 1854 and 1855 she was in Sevastopol. Flooded in 1855 at the Sevastopol raid when the city left the garrison [1] [2] .
