Shields, Carol

Carol Ann Shields ( Eng. Carol Ann Shields ; June 2, 1935 - July 16, 2003 ) is a Canadian writer and poetess, Pulitzer Prize laureate [4] .

Biography

Carol Ann Warner was born June 2, 1935 in Oak Park Illinois , USA .

In 1955, thanks to a British Council scholarship, Carol spent a week in Scotland, where she met a Canadian engineering student Donald Shields. In 1957, they got married, Carol moved to Canada, where they had a son and four daughters. In 1971, Shields received Canadian citizenship [5] .

In 1957, she received a bachelor 's degree at Hanover College. Shields studied literary skills at the University of Toronto, in 1965 won the competition for young writers, established by Canadian Radio. Since 1968, for 10 years, the Carol family has lived in Ottawa. In 1973, Carol worked as an assistant editor at Canadian Slavonic Papers. In 1975, she received a master's degree in English literature from the University of Ottawa . In 1976, she published a dissertation on the Canadian poetess and writer of the XIX century Suzanne Moody . Since 1978, Carol lives in Vancouver, in 1980, moves with his family to Winnipeg , where he holds professorships at the University of Manitoba .

Shields died on July 16, 2003 in Victoria, British Columbia , from the complications of breast cancer that she was diagnosed with in 1998 [5] .

  • 2000 - Dressing up for the Carnival, a short story collection.
  • 2001 - literary biography of Jane Austen .
