Biography
Alexey Makienko was born in 1925 in the village of Tolkachovka (now - the Pryluky district of the Chernihiv region of Ukraine ). He graduated from elementary school. In August 1943, Makienko was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and sent to the front of the Great Patriotic War [1] .
By July 1944, the Red Army guard Aleksey Makienko was a machine gunner of the 12th Guards Rifle Regiment of the 5th Guards Rifle Division of the 11th Guards Army of the 3rd Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself in battles in the territory of the Lithuanian SSR . On July 14, 1944, Makienko was one of the first to cross the Neman in the vicinity of the village of Myarkin in the Varensky district and took an active part in the battles for the seizure and retention of the bridgehead. Reflecting a large number of German counterattacks, he held his position until the crossing of the main forces [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the “courage and heroism shown when crossing the Neman and holding the bridgehead on its western shore” of the guard, Red Army soldier Alexei Makienko was awarded the high title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Gold Star medal for number 7239 [1] .
In 1946, Makienko was demobilized. He lived and worked in his native village. He died suddenly on February 21, 1952, and was buried in the cemetery of the village of Tolkachovka [1] .
He was also awarded the Order of the Red Star and a number of medals [1] .
