Biography
Descended from the hereditary nobles of the Simbirsk province; parents: Boris Andreevich Shidlovsky (1884–1942) and Alexandra Vsevolodovna, nee Skorokhodova (1887–1976).
In 1930 he graduated from 7 classes of high school in Ulyanovsk . After the family moved to Moscow and graduated from the trade school, for several years he worked as a turner in the factory.
In 1934, the Komsomol mobilization was sent to the construction of the first stage of the Moscow metro , where he worked as a driver and insulator.
After serving in the Red Army (1936-1937) and graduating from evening school, he entered the mechanics and mathematics department of Moscow University in 1939.
On June 26, 1941, he volunteered for the army: he began his service as a junior topographer at the Bryansk Front , and graduated as commander of a battery of self-propelled artillery units in China.
After demobilization in 1946, he continued his studies at the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow State University, which he graduated in 1950. In 1953 he graduated from graduate school , and in 1954 he defended his thesis: "On the transcendence and algebraic independence of the values of entire functions of certain classes." His supervisor was A. O. Gelfond .
In the years of study at the university and in graduate school he worked as a senior lecturer at the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. V. I. Lenin , and then in the same place - an associate professor and a part-time professor .
In 1954, at the initiative of A. Ya. Khinchin, he was invited to the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University. In 1955 he became an associate professor of the department of mathematical analysis. He defended his doctoral dissertation in 1959 : "On a class of transcendental numbers ."
Since 1960 - Professor of the Department of Number Theory. In 1968 - 2001 - Head of the Department of Number Theory.
During the years of work at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Moscow State University, A. B. Shidlovsky spent many years reading the basic courses of mathematical analysis and number theory , special courses on number theory: “The arithmetic properties of the values of analytic functions”, “Diophantine approximations and transcendental numbers”, “Fundamentals of the theory numbers ”,“ Algebraic and transcendental numbers ”; supervised scientific seminars.
He prepared 15 candidates of science, three of whom defended doctoral dissertations, among them Yu. V. Nesterenko .
The scientific results of Andrei Borisovich Shidlovsky relate to the theory of transcendental numbers , the main tasks of which are to study the irrationality and transcendence of various numbers, and in a more general formulation, to prove the absence of algebraic relations between them over the field of rational numbers.
For a number of years he worked as deputy dean of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics (1956–1964), was a member of the Academic Council of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, a member of the expert committee of the Higher Attestation Commission of the USSR.
He was buried at Vvedensky cemetery with his mother.
