History

The painting was acquired by Sergei Tretyakov in 1885 at the posthumous sale of works by Bastien-Lepage, which took place in the Paris gallery of Georges Petit ( Fr. Galerie Georges Petit ) [6] . The Museum in the Luxembourg Gardens was also interested in buying the painting “Village Love” - the museum’s curators chose between it and the Bastien-Lepage painting “ Haymaking ”. As a result, their choice rested on the painting "Haymaking" (which was subsequently transferred to the Louvre , and is now located in the Orsay Museum ) [7] [8] . Thus, “Village Love” came to Sergey Tretyakov and eventually became one of the most famous paintings in his collection [9] .

The painting was transferred to the Pushkin Museum from the State Museum of New Western Art (GMNZI) [3] .

Description

The picture depicts a young man and a girl in peasant clothes, standing next to each other on opposite sides of a rickety hedge separating two land plots. The girl is standing with her back, her face is not visible. She is dressed in a long skirt, her hair is braided in two braids. On the fence hangs her scarf. The young man is facing the viewer, he bent so that his head was on a par with the girl. He is dressed in a light shirt, and his pants are covered with a special protective apron. He looks confused - perhaps just at that moment he is talking about his love. In the background, behind the site, the houses and the top of the church are visible. In the far part of the plot you can see the figure of a working woman [4] .

In 1973, the USSR Ministry of Communications issued a postage stamp with a reproduction of this painting, the face value of the stamp was 16 kopecks (No. 4305 according to the CFA catalog ).

Reviews

The painting "Village Love" on a 1973 USSR postage stamp

Artist Mikhail Nesterov in his letters about L.N. Tolstoy , published in his book Long Days (published in 1942), wrote about a conversation with a writer in Yasnaya Polyana in the summer of 1906 [10] :

In the evening the conversation became general, and with pleasant amazement I was told: “So what you are!” The reason for “pleasant amazement” was my opinion about Bastien-Lepage's painting “Village Love”. But my opinion was this: the picture “Village Love” in strength, purity of feeling could be in the temple. This picture, in its innermost, deepest sense, is more Russian than French. Before the painting “Village Love”, the wedding ceremony could be even more touching, effective than before the images, often soulless, cold. Bastien-Lepage in poetic language in painting expressed the purest thoughts of two loving, simple-hearted people.

Highly appreciated the painting "Village Love" and the artist Valentin Serov . As the art critic Andrei Tolstoy wrote [11] ,

The creative heritage of Bastien-Lepage was also relevant for Russian artists of a different orientation, representing, as it were, the next generation in the history of Russian painting. According to Nesterov , Valentin Serov was familiar with the work of Bastien-Lepage in the Moscow meeting of S.M. Tretyakova often said: "Every Sunday I go there to watch" Village Love "." Nesterov added: "But Serov knew what to watch, when he was young, he knew as a young man!"

The painting made a great impression on the artist Viktor Borisov-Musatov , who noted her enlightened atmosphere and richness of tones. He even wrote a poem in which there were such lines [12] :

 Was my ideal long ago
