Archdiocese of Perugia Citta della Pieve

The Archdiocese of Perugia-Citta della Pieve ( Latin: Archidioecesis Perusina-Civitatis Plebis ) is the archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church with its center in the city of Perugia , Italy . The metropolis of Perugia-Chittal della Pieve includes the dioceses of the Diocese of Assisi-Nocher-Umbra-Gualdo-Tadino , the Diocese of Città di Castello , the Diocese of Foligno , the Diocese of Gubbio . The cathedral of the Archdiocese of Perugia Città della Pieve is the Church of St. Lawrence.

History

The Diocese of Perugia was founded in the 2nd century and its first bishop is considered to be Saint Constantius of Perugia. The first bishop mentioned in historical documents was St. Maximian, who is mentioned in the decisions of the Roman Synods of the late V and early VI centuries and who was martyred in 546 by decree of Totila .

The diocese of Chita della Pieve is known from the XI century. In 1099, the bishop of Chita della Pieve was mentioned expelled from the city and later Pope Paschalius II abolished the diocese of Chita della Pieve, annexing its territory to the diocese of Chiusi .

In the Middle Ages, Perugia was influenced by the Guelphs . In the 13th century, Pope Honorius III , Honorius IV , Celestine V and Clement V lived in Perugia. In 1564, a diocesan seminary was founded in Perugia.

On September 25, 1600, Pope Clement VIII issued the bull In supereminenti , which recreated the diocese of Chita della Pieve. The first bishop of Chita della Pieve was Angello Angelotti died in the year of his election, without receiving episcopal consecration.

On March 27, 1882, Pope Leo XIII issued the bull “Universae Ecclesiae” , which raised the diocese of Perugia to the rank of archdiocese ..

On August 15, 1972, Pope Paul VI issued the bull Animorum utilitati , to which he added the diocese of Città della Pieve to the metropolis of Perugia.

On June 3, 1977, the Archbishop of Perugia was given the chair of the diocese of Città della Pieve. On September 30, 1986, the Holy See annexed the diocese of Città della Pieve to the archdiocese of Perugia.
