Member, Winemaker, Mayor of the Rebel League

At the age of 20, Pierre Tettenzhe joined the Bonapartist movement. He participated in the First World War , was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honor . In 1919 and 1924 he was elected to parliament.

In 1932 founded in Epernay , near Reims , subsequently glorified Taittinger champagne winery.

In 1924 he founded the anti-republican "rebellious league" Jeunesses patriotes - Patriotic youth - one of the most active right-wing organizations of interwar France. The League occupied extremely anti-communist , authoritarian positions [1] , copied the style of Italian fascism , had a paramilitary wing Camelots du roi ( Royal Thugs ). However, the ultra-conservative traditionalist ideology of “Patriotic youth” was not fascist in the Mussolinian or, especially, Hitler sense of the term [2] .

In 1935 , the far-right National Social Party was formed on the basis of the league. In 1937, Jacques Doriot invited Pierre Tettenzhe to join the anti-communist coalition Front of Freedom , but was refused.

For several years, Pierre Tettenge served as mayor of Saint-Georges-de-Coto . Since 1937 - municipal councilor of Paris.

"Paris Was Not Destroyed"

On July 10, 1940, the deputy of Tettenzhe voted to grant extraordinary powers to Marshal Petain . This meant a transition to the position of collaboration . In 1943, the Tettenge was confirmed by the German occupation authorities as chairman of the Council of Paris . Received the Order of Francisi from the Vichy government .

On September 4, 1943, in a confidential letter to Pierre Laval, Pierre Tettenzhe actually warned of his intention to surrender Paris to the troops of the anti-Hitler coalition without a fight. August 17, 1944 began negotiations with the commander of the German garrison, General von Holtitz. On August 19, he made contact with the leader of the Resistance forces in the capital, the communist Henri Rol-Tangi . Tettenzhe managed to convince von Holtitz to refuse to comply with Hitler's instructions on the methodological destruction of Paris [3] . On August 25, General Leclerc and Colonel Rol-Tanguy accepted the surrender of the occupation garrison.

Tettenzhe hoped to personally meet General de Gaulle to hand over the keys to the town hall, but on August 25, 1944 he was arrested and imprisoned. Released on February 27, 1945 . He was struck in civil rights and left political activity. However, in 1953 - 1965 - until his death - Pierre Tettenzhe remained mayor of Saint-Georges de Coto.

After the war. Public Perception

Pierre Tettenzhe published the book Et Paris ne fut pas détruit - “And Paris Was Not Destroyed” [4] (rephrasing the famous threat of the Duke of Braunschweig ’s manifesto “Paris will be destroyed”). He outlined his version of the events of August 1944.

Since 1954 - an honorary member of the French Academy . He was also a member of the Association for the Protection of the Memory of Marshal Petain.

At his own expense, Tettenje restored several historic buildings in Reims. He bequeathed to the city a large estate, including on the Ile de Re , where a children's summer camp was created.

One of the sons of Pierre Tettenzhe - Michelle - died in battles with the Germans in 1940 . The other - Jean - in 1959 - 1977 was the mayor of Reims, in 1971 - 1974 - Secretary of State for Budget and Minister of Justice. The third - Pierre-Christian - headed the administration of one of the districts of Paris and was a senator of France . The fourth, Claude, ran the Taittinger family winery [5] and was a member of the Council of the Bank of France . Tettenje’s grandson - the son of his daughter Colette - Christophe de Margerie - in 2007 - 2014 was chairman of the board of the largest French energy concern Total , actively developed business in Russia , was considered a “business partner and lobbyist for Putin’s interests” and died in an accident at Moscow 's Vnukovo airport " [6]

The activities of Pierre Tettenge in the first half of the 1940s, according to a number of criteria, are consistent with the concept of collaboration. However, many Frenchmen consider the role of Tettenge in the liberation of Paris as a sufficient atonement. Attitude towards the Tettenge in France in most cases is neutral or restrained-positive.
