The monument to Jan Matejko ( Polish: Pomnik Jana Matejki ) is a monument to the Polish painter Jan Matejko (1838-1893), the author of battle and historical paintings, primarily of patriotic content; the artist’s whole life was connected with Krakow. The monument is located in the Krakow Old Town on the western side of the Barbican from the side of Bashtovaya street opposite the Krakow Academy of Arts .

Content
History
Until 1997, there was a necropolis and a monument to 19 Soviet soldiers who died during the liberation of Krakow. The remains of the Soviet military and the monument were transferred to the Military Cemetery on Prandota Street .
The monument was authored by professor of the Krakow Academy of Art Jan Tutai [1] . The decision to erect a monument to Jan Matejko at this location was made by the city council in 2008, but due to problems with financing the project, the installation was delayed for the next five years [2] . The monument was unveiled on November 12, 2013 in a festive atmosphere by the President of Krakow, Jacek Mayhrowski, during the celebration of the 175th anniversary of the birth and 120th anniversary of the death of Jan Matejko.
