Scientific activity
During expeditions with the participation of Udintsev, the maximum depths of the World Ocean were measured, including the deepest point - the Mariana Trench. The publication in 1963 of the bathymetric map of the Pacific Ocean became an important event in the knowledge of the Earth.
In the late 60s - mid 70s, Udintsev led several expeditions aimed at studying rifting in the Indian and Atlantic oceans.
He took an active part in the largest scientific event of the 20th century - in the project on deep-sea drilling on the Glomar Challenger vessel. He headed the Soviet Ocean Drilling Commission as part of this Soviet-American project. And in 1974 he became the cofounder of the voyage on the American vessel Glomar Challenger, which carried out work in the region of Iceland.
Geographical discoveries made by Udintsev during the expeditions: the deep-sea trench “Vityaz”, underwater ridges and elevations of Shirshov, Shatsky, Obruchev, the Academy of Sciences, the fault zone “Vityaz”, Kurchatov.
