Biography

Born in Moscow [1] in the family of a public education enthusiast and translator Nikolai Mikhailovich Gorbov and Sofia Nikolaevna Gorbova (nee Maslova), who left wonderful family memories [2] [3] . The family lived for a long time in Khamovniki , in Vlasyevsky Lane. From childhood I was familiar with Anastasia Tsvetaeva , who briefly mentioned him.

Studying at the university was interrupted by the outbreak of the First World War . In Petersburg he graduated from the Nikolaev Cavalry School [4] . Together with his brothers Sergey (1893 - 1915) and Mikhail (1898 - 1961) he joined the army [5] . Jacob served in the automobile forces, the younger brother Mikhail in equestrian artillery. The elder Sergei died in 1915. During the Civil War, Jacob and Mikhail served in the Volunteer Army [6] .

After the defeat of the White Guards in the Crimea, the family emigrated to Germany, then settled in France. In Lille, where Jacob initially lived with his wife Vera Iznar (1896−1977), who came with him from Russia, he and his brother Mikhail participated in founding the Orthodox Church. Then the brothers graduated from the Higher Textile School in Mulhouse, later Jacob was a volunteer at the Catholic Institute. He worked as a driver, while writing poetry and prose, but for a long time was not published. He volunteered for the French army [7] , in 1940 went to the front, was wounded [8] . After the wound, he took up gardening and returned to writing. He lived in Lourmarin and Paris. In the 1950s met the poetess Irina Odoevtseva , in 1978, married her [9] .

He died in September 1981 . He was buried in Paris in a cemetery in Shell next to his first wife.

Creativity

In 1944, in Lyon (Revue "Confluences"), the poems of Y. Gorbov were published, in 1947 the first novel Les chemins de I'Enfer (Hell's Roads) was published, in 1951 - Le second avènement (The Second advent), in 1955 - “M-me Sophie” (Madame Sophie, translated into Russian by I. Odoevtseva), in 1958 - a collection of short stories “Ne parlons plus du passé: six nouvelles”, translated from Russian by the author. He has worked in top French magazines, including Les Nouvelles littéraires . All of his novels are well received by critics, and the novel Les condamnés (Sentenced) was awarded the Four Jury Prize in 1954. Since 1961, he was the editor of the journal Vozrozhdenie , and was published in Russian: the novels All Relations (1964), Asunta (1967).
