The early years
Duke Erickson was born in Lyon, a small rural community in Nebraska. His first musical instrument was the piano, and later he learned to play the guitar. At the age of 16, he joined his first group, they performed at small parties at school, where they often drank. In school, he worked part-time as a carpenter and truck driver.
Musician career
1974-1985
In 1974, Erickson formed his first rock band Spooner with two friends musicians from Madison, Wisconsin. Erickson wrote poetry, music, was a vocalist, guitarist and keyboard player. When the band became known to the press, their music was described as "strangely attractive." Soon they were joined by the fourth participant - Butch Vig . The group released two successful albums and split up. In 1983, he helped Vig and Steve Marker set up Smart Studios in Madison, where he worked for some time with professional musicians.
1986-1993
In 1986, he again collaborated with Butch Vig and wanted to create a garage rock band Fire town with him, in which he would be a guitarist and producer. Fire town released two albums - In the Heart of the Heart Country and The Good Life. Rolling Stone rated the band's debut album as amazing and thoughtful.
From 1994 to the present
In 1994, Steve Marker, Butch Wiig and Duke Erickson decided to create a new group, different from the others. They all unanimously decided that the vocalist should be a girl, but could not find a suitable vocalist. One day, they saw Shirley Manson in an Angelfish MTV video for the song Suffucate me. They all wanted her as the lead singer of a new band. Soon, Garbage - became a cult group of the 90s and 2000s, having recorded five studio albums, Garbage achieved worldwide success and popularity around the world, in which Duke Erickson played a significant role.
