Biography
The son of Baron Karl-Ludwig von Ungern-Sternberg (1706-1749) and his wife Gedwig-Eleanor Strokirch (1710-1749).
In service since 1752. In 1760, the captain at the First Cadet Corps . Since 1761, the foreman , adjutant general of Peter III . Received a lifetime estate in a large estate in the province of Estonia . In 1762 he was appointed to the commission to improve the condition of the troops.
He swore allegiance to Catherine II only after the death of Emperor Peter; he refused the post of Adjutant General.
In 1764 he was promoted to major general .
During the Russian-Turkish war of 1768-1774 he led the artillery in the battles of Larg and Cahul (1770), was awarded the Order of St. Anne . In 1771-1772 he commanded a brigade.
Since 1773, the corps commander with the rank of lieutenant general . In October 1773, the detachments of K. K. Ungern-Sternberg and Prince Yu. V. Dolgorukov crossed the Danube and defeated the Turks at Karasu. For this victory he was awarded the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky .
From September 12, 1774 to July 25, 1779, the St. Petersburg Civil Governor. In the 1770s - 1780s, he actively participated in the life of Masonic lodges in Vologda and St. Petersburg, was outlined in the Great Provincial Lodge.
Having retired, he handed over one of his estates to the Society of Noble Maidens .
In some sources, the year 1799 was named the year of the death of Baron Ungern. But it is known that already in September 1797, the estates that were in his lifetime possession were transferred to other persons. This means that by that time Karl Karlovich was dead.
In 1796, Emperor Paul I, as a reward for the service under his father, Peter III, awarded Ungern-Sternberg the rank of infantry general and awarded the second Order of St. Alexander Nevsky. The lists awarded the Order of St. Alexander Nevsky for 1796 include General-General Gustaf von Ungern-Sternberg.
