El cant dels ocells (“Song of the Birds” [1] ) is a Catalan folk song, one of the national symbols of Catalonia [2] . This is a Christmas song in which different birds express their joy at the news of the birth of Christ . Particularly popular outside Catalonia was in the instrumental arrangement for cello , made by Pau Casals .
Content
History
- In 1705, a parody version of the song appeared, dedicated to the conquest of Barcelona by Archduke Charles VI [2] .
- In 1992, the song was performed by opera singer Victoria de Los Angeles at the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games in Barcelona [3] [4] . According to analysts, the performance along with the Catalan song of Spanish classics - “ Aranjuez Concert ” - made it possible to balance the manifestations of Catalan and Spanish nationalism during these Games [5] .
Cinema
- El cant dels ocells - feature film by Albert Serra (2008), dedicated to the journey of the Magi to the baby Christ. The only musical composition sounding in the film is “Song of the Birds” in the instrumental version of Casals.
