History

The Netherlands team made its debut in the Davis Cup in 1920 . In 1925, the Dutch team managed to reach the finals of the European zone of the tournament for applicants, where it lost to the French team , where at that time three of the four “musketeers” - Rene Lacoste , Jean Borotra and Jacques Bruñon played [1] . Three years later, the Dutch reached the semi-finals of the European zone, losing to the Czechs there.

In the postwar years, the Dutch team for a long time remained outside the group of the strongest national teams in the world, usually losing already in the first or second round of the European zone. In the first half of the 80s, her game improved, but not enough to get into the recently created World Group, where the tennis elite performed. The Netherlands were closest to entering the World Group in 1981, when the USSR national team stopped them in the final of the European group. Only in 1989 did the first ever Dutch team enter the World Group after winning the playoffs over the former Dutch colony - Indonesia. The Netherlands spent most of the 90s and the first half of the next decade in the World Group, only occasionally sinking back into the European-African. Their best result in the World Group was in 2001 reaching the semifinals after victories over the Spaniards and Germans . This success was ensured by the team Ramon Slater , Sheng Schalken , Jan Simerink and Paul Harkhuis [2] . Only in the semifinals did they lose to future champions - the French team.

Since 2007, the Netherlands national team has been playing mainly in the I European-African group, only twice (according to the results of 2008 and 2013) having managed to get into the World Group draw. During this time, the Dutch also fought three times for survival in the I European-African group - in 2007, 2010 and 2016.
