Malcolm Champion was born in 1883. His father was Captain William Nhil Champion, who traded on his ship throughout the Pacific Ocean; Sarah Klara Kienthal’s mother was from Norfolk Island and belonged to the descendants of the Bounty rebels resettled here from Pitcairn Island .
Malcolm Champion became an excellent swimmer, and from 1901 to 1914 he won 32 New Zealand titles; however, at the end of 1902 he was expelled from the National Swimming Association for non-payment of the registration fee, and returned to participation in official sports events only from the summer season of 1907-1908. In 1911, he took part in the Empire Festival in London , dedicated to the coronation of George V.
In 1912, the club for which he played had to borrow money to send Malcolm Champion to the Olympic Games in Stockholm (in these games Australia and New Zealand acted as a joint team - the team of Australasia). There he became the champion in the relay 4 × 200 m freestyle.
