Louis Shalif was a fairly significant figure in New York society in the first half of the 20th century . He was called the "head of New York City dance teachers" [4] . In 1949, Dance Magazine wrote about him: "even during his lifetime, Louis became almost the legendary figure in the world of dance art" [5] . In different years of his life, Louis wrote many textbooks on dance techniques and books describing folk dances, five of which were translated into various languages of the world. He is credited with a large number of diverse compositions and arrangements , as well as a number of ballet productions. [five]

Biography

Louis Harvey Shalif was born in 1876 in the city of Odessa , Russian Empire . At the age of 9, he began to practice ballet at the State Theater of Odessa under the direction of Tomas (or, in Russian, Thomas) Nizhinsky, the father of famous dancers Wenceslas and Bronislava . After completing classes in 1893, Shalif joined the Warsaw and Russian Imperial Ballets, having received his first diploma in 1895. In 1897, Louis became a choreographer in the theater of Odessa [6] .

In 1904, Louis immigrated to New York . There, over the years 1905-1906, he danced in the ballet of the Metropolitan Opera musical theater and served as an assistant to the choreographer Luigi Albertieri ( Italian: Luigi Albertieri ; 1860 - 1930). In addition, he taught at some private schools, including the New York School of Ethical Culture (founded by Felix Adler), a charity on Henry Street and New York University [6] .

In 1905, Louis opened his own dance and pedagogical school ( English The Chalif Normal School of Dancing ), in which he taught not only beginner dancers and children, but also teachers of dance, physical education and fitness (hence the prefix "pedagogical"). Shalifa was the first school in the United States to train dance instructors. In 1907, it moved to 42nd Street . In 1909, Louis taught "sports dancing" to members of the YMCA , and was also a choreographer of historical, national and folk dances at the Hudson-Fulton festival in New York . After 1910, Louis stopped speaking and completely focused on teaching activities [6] .

Louis Shalif was vice president of the American Society of Teachers of Dancing [7] . From 1910 to 1918, he taught at the American Society of Professors of Dancing [8] .

In 1913-1914, the school was transferred to the building of the “ Terpsichore Temple” on 57th Street, located near Carnegie Hall [6] , at the request of Luis. However, already in 1916, the choreographer instructed architects George and Henry Boehm to design a new building for the dance school , which Shalif later became very proud of, saying: "In general, the school building is unparalleled in America. This is a clear example of the success the school faced, providing best dance lessons " [6] . The work of architects - a 5-story building, valued at about $ 110,000 - has also gained recognition in society: the 1916 real estate guide described the project as "a clean, modern, colorless solution, classic in nature, fueled by ideas from the Greek and Roman periods " [5] . The National Cyclopaedia of American Biography called the school “an amazingly beautiful building” [5] . The building, which served as both a school and a home, was in the possession of Shalif until 1933. A year later, in October 1934, during the Great Depression, Louis lost his rights to him. The building, however, was not destroyed or remodeled and in 1946 it was acquired by Karl Fischer, a well-known American music publisher. In 1959, the building was sold to Columbia Artists Management, Inc. (CAMI), to which it belongs to this day [9] .

In 1919, the council of bishops of the Methodist Episcopal Church banned dancing. This caused resentment from Luis Shalif. In November 1920, at a regular meeting of the committee, his letter was considered, stating: "We will continue to call for the repeal of these Puritan laws." Louis complained about the participants in the General Conference in May, describing them as "ostriches who refused to discuss the question outside the congregation, and kept the ban even on the circus." But despite the decision of the Episcopal Church, Shalif continues his work.

In 1935, Luis met with Russian ballet dancer Bronislava Nizhinsky . During the meeting, he assured the latter that "Tomas Nizhinsky, as a choreographer, surpasses Mikhail Fokin ." In his opinion, the father’s ballet “ Bakhchisarai Fountain ” was much better than “Scheherazade” [10] .

With the loss of his own school, Louis did not leave his teaching career. In 1937, he transferred his studies to the International Building at Rockefeller Center at 530 Avenue , 630 [6] , and later to Steinway Hall.

In 1945, Dance Magazine attributed to Louis Shalif the popularization of “working at the machine, using his toes and using classical music in dance training,” and placed him “in the front ranks of the social movement, which provided every child in America with the opportunity to practice ballet” simplification and adaptation of Russian dance techniques [5] .

On November 25, 1948, Louis Shalif died in the city of New York , USA [11] .

Through his efforts in the field of education, in particular the creation of a dance and teacher training school, Louis Schalif had a great influence on the promotion of dance art in New York and the United States as a whole. He taught dance art to such personalities as Harriet Hawthor [12] , Marjorie Lord [13] , Diana Vreeland , Rita de la Porte [14] and others.
