Siberian macaque ( Latin Macaca siberu ) - a species of monkeys of the family of monkeys of the primate order, one of the species of the Macaque genus.

ClassificationThe Siberian macaque was combined with the Pagai macaque , both of which were part of the Macaca nemestrina species (southern pig-tailed macaque), but this classification was recognized as polyphilic and according to the results of molecular studies in 2002, these species were separated. DescriptionSiberian monkeys are medium sized primates. Externally similar to the Pagai monkeys, but have a darker coat. Sexual dimorphism is expressed , males are larger than females. The hair on the back is almost black, and it is reddish on the sides and on the arms. Cheeks covered with light wool. The belly and throat are also light in color. The body length is on average 47.5 cm, tail length from 6.5 to 8 cm. Weight is about 9.1 kg (males). [3]
SpreadEndemic island Siberut in Indonesia , where it lives in both primary and secondary forests, preferring swampy areas along the banks of rivers. [four]
Population statusEnough rare animal. The population size is estimated from 17 thousand to 30 thousand individuals. The International Union for Conservation of Nature has assigned the protection status Vulnerable to this species. [four]
