Principality History
In 1587, after the successful conquest of the Kyushu island, Toyotomi Hideyoshi allocated the islands of Hirado and Oki to the local daimo Matsuura Shigenobu ( 1549 - 1614 ). During the Korean War (1592-1598), the island of Hirado served as a transshipment base for Japanese troops.
In 1599, Matsuura Shigenobu built the Hirotake-jo Castle on the site of the modern Hirado Castle. However, in 1613, Matsuura Shigenobu himself burned his castle as a sign of loyalty to the first Japanese shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. In return, Tokugawa Ieyasu allowed Matsuura Shigenobu and his descendants to rule Hirado Khan.
The modern Hirado Castle was built in 1704 by order of the 5th daimyo Matsuura Takashi ( 1689 - 1713 ) with the permission and assistance of the Tokugawa Shogunate. During the reign of Matsuura Takashi for his younger brother Matsuura Masashi , a daughter principality was created - Hirado-Shinden Khan ( 1689 - 1870 ). Matsuura Takashi has held several important government posts in the Tokugawa Shogunate government. However, his expenses for the construction of the castle of Hirado led to the bankruptcy of the principality.
The 9th daimyo Matsuura Kiyoshi ( 1775 - 1806 ) was a famous swordsman and publicist . The last (12th) daimyo Matsuura Akira ( 1858 - 1871 ) entered the Satto Union and ordered his military units to fight on the side of the new Emperor Meiji against the Tokugawa Shogunate . Hirado-Khan units fought against the bakufu at the Battle of Toba - Fushimi ( 1868 ), and then against members of the Northern Union : the principalities of Morioka and Akita . In April 1884, Matsuura Akira received the titles of a peer and count . Since 1890, he sat in the upper house of peers, and later was awarded the 2nd court rank.
Hirado Khan was liquidated in 1871 .
