Content
Gameplay
The first part of the series was criticized for its overly automated gameplay and poor replayability . In contrast, the gameplay of Dungeon Siege II is more diverse and complemented by elements of strategy. Teleports between cities and equipment sets that appeared earlier in Dungeon Siege: Legends of Aranna were added to the game: when equipping a character in a full set of equipment of the same type, the characteristics of the character significantly improve compared to equipment in different types of equipment.
Teams and Pets
The team game system has remained from the previous part . At the beginning of the game, the player selects the main character, to which he can later attach other characters or pets. The maximum number of characters can be four, five or six, depending on the level of difficulty. At any time, the player can "fire" any game character, except for the main one. If in the first game only a donkey for carrying trophies could be taken as a pet, now the pet can be a fighting creature with its own skills and magical abilities.
Ranks
The player has three difficulty levels: “mercenary”, “veteran” and “elite”. A new character can start the game only at the “mercenary” level, and after completing the game, begin the second passage with a “veteran”, and the third with the “elite”. Each subsequent passage begins the plot anew, but the entire game group and equipment remains with the players; the level of enemies increases; player level growth slows down; steeper artifacts will drop from enemies (sets of armor and weapons (yellow); unique items (purple)). As in the previous part of the game, the experience extends to all members of the squad, and the speed of development depends on the size of the group.
Battle Automation
When developing the game, the superiority of battles in the automatic mode was reduced and now the player is required to press the right mouse button for each hit or cast of a spell. For players who liked the combat system of the previous part, the opportunity was given to select the enemy and hold the right mouse button until the enemy was killed (this makes the combat system similar to the battle system in Diablo II ). An option was left in which the character defended himself, or continued to fight on his own.
Specialties and Skills
In Dungeon Siege, players were divided into only four specialties (classes): melee warrior, ranged warrior, nature mage and battle mage. The development in each specialty came from what weapons and spells the player most often uses. In Dungeon Siege II, all specialties have a number of skills, arranged in a tree structure, and determining the specific capabilities of the characters. For example, melee warriors can "pump" the skill of holding a shield to better defend themselves and the group, the skill of owning a two-handed weapon to do more damage to the enemy, or a weapon in each hand for strong Area Effect hits. As in the first game, one character can learn several specialties at once, but one well-pumped specialty is much more useful than several "under-trained" ones.
Gifts
The innovation of the second part is gifts. These are superpowers that are used in cases where a conventional attack is ineffective. Gifts are charged during fights and are consumed once at the request of the player. Gifts can be: crushing blow, fire rain, invisibility, healing of the whole team and many others. You can acquire a gift when the skill corresponding to it has been trained to the appropriate level. Each gift has 3 power levels and, as a rule, receiving a first-level gift requires one skill of a certain level, while at the same time up to three well-developed skills are required for a third-level gift. The gift system has been expanded and specialized in the game Dungeon Siege III .
Magic
As in the first game, the magic system is divided into "magic of nature" and "martial magic." The task of the nature magician is to cast healing and protective spells, summon magical creatures, and use cold magic. The task of a war mage is, accordingly, to inflict serious damage to the enemy with the magic of fire, lightning, death, a curse and also summon magical creatures. Each of the magicians can impose auras of improvement (" buffs ") and deterioration (" debuffs ") on themselves, their team or enemies.
Death
As in many games of this genre, the classic game " Game over " is missing. As soon as the character runs out of a vital level of health, the character loses consciousness and is not able to move or perform any action. You can get out of the coma only after waiting for a while until the level of health increases, or using the healing magic of another character. If the enemy causes significant damage to a living character, or continues to attack the character unconscious, the character may die. In this case, it can be resurrected using the resurrection magic by another character, or by someone in the city. If the character is only one, then after receiving a serious wound, he does not lose consciousness, but immediately dies and is transferred to the city.
In the event of the death of the whole team, it is possible to resurrect it and at the same time teleport to the nearest city. In this case, all the equipment and trophies of the team will disappear and some of them will remain at the place of death, there are two ways to return things: to look for things at the place of death, or to find a resurrector in the nearest town and pay a certain amount to return things.
Story
According to the introductory video, during the First Age, two of the world's most powerful creatures met in battle: the representative of the good Azunai and the representative of the evil Zaramot. Each of them owned a powerful magical artifact: Azunai - a shield, and Zaramot - a sword with equal power. Having met together, the sword broke the shield, which led to a worldwide cataclysm. Later, the peoples called the events preceding this battle the “First Era,” and the events following it the “Second Epoch”.
The main character, controlled by the player, and his friend Drevin, act as mercenaries of the army of Voldis, a powerful military leader who sided with the Dark Mages race and wields the same sword of Zaramot. The main character and Drevin were ordered to capture the temple of the dryads . However, after a successful attack, Voldis destroys his mercenaries. Drevin dies, and the main character only loses consciousness.
The hero comes to himself as a prisoner in Ayrulan, the city of dryads. Instead of judicially executing the Hero, the dryads give him a chance to earn his freedom if he helps them in the war against Waldis. After completing a series of tasks, the Hero gains freedom, but finds himself infected with the plague, a mysterious disease created by the Dark Mages, which brings the infected to complete insanity. After curing water from the source of the Elven Shrine, the Hero goes to his hometown of Aman-Lu.
On the way home, the Hero rescues a mysterious old man from the plague-ridden dryads. The old man talks about the events of the Great Cataclysm that happened after the shield of Azunai and the sword of Zaramot, which Woldis now owns, met. The split of the shield caused a cataclysm that completed the First Age. Voldis hopes to cause a similar catastrophe again, trying to find four parts of a shattered shield around the world. The old man explains that the plague is the result of crystals created during the Great Cataclysm, capable of controlling the souls of the army of Zaramot and instilling them in living beings.
Upon returning home, the Hero begins to collect the fragments of the shield of Azunay, to subsequently use it against Waldis. After successfully finding all the parts, the Hero carries them to the Agallan giants so that they again forge a shield. After forging, they put in the center of the shield a magical medallion given by Hero Drevin before death, which gives the shield much more strength than in the First Epoch.
Armed with the shield of Azunay, the Hero goes to the fortress of Voldis, known as the Peak of Zaramot. The shield successfully protects him from the forces of the Dark Mages, however, the battle with Voldis is stalled, as an old man appears, saved by the player and reveals his true face: he is the main of the Dark Mages. The old man takes the shield from the Hero and gives it to Voldis. Waldis strikes Zaramot's sword on the shield, however, this time the sword is split, not the shield. Voldis loses his main weapon, engages in a battle with the Hero and dies.
Addition
Gas Powered Games has developed the only Broken World add-on , published in August 2006 by 2K Games . The supplement is a continuation of the second part and requires not only that it be installed, but also passed. As a hero, you can choose either the "old" or create anew, including the new Dwarf race, while the character will already be level 39 [2] [3] [4] .
