History and Description

Early history

Calgary Central School, 1905

The University of Calgary was founded in 1966, but its roots go back more than half a century earlier, when the Normal School was established in 1905 in Calgary. The purpose of this school, based in Calgary, was the education and training of primary and secondary school teachers who lived in the province. [1] However, the residents of Calgary attempted to create another state-funded university in Calgary. The “Calgary University Reunification Act” was presented in first reading, as was the bill in Alberta’s law, as an attempt to create a private university in Calgary. The legislature allowed the institute to reunite under the name of Kalgar College , and not under the name of Kalgar University . He received college credentials for the examinations required for admission. [2]

Calgary sought to become an institute for higher professional education with a diploma and honors, as well as to confer powers that led to the opening of a branch of the University of Alberta in Calgary in 1945. A branch of the University of Alberta in Calgary ultimately received full autonomy in 1966 and became the University of Calgary.

University teaching was formed on the basis of the American State University (similar to the University of Alberta), with an emphasis on expanding work and applied research. The managerial staff was modeled on the basis of the University of Toronto and the Act of 1906, according to which a bicameral government system was created at the university, consisting of the senate (faculty) responsible for academic policy and the management board (citizens) who exercised control over financial policies powers in all other matters. The president, appointed by the council, was the link between the bodies that led the organizational leadership. [3]

Currently

The Center for Child Development at Calgary University is the first building in Alberta that was designed to LEED standards (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), which has become a benchmark for environmentally-efficient buildings. The faculty, in which the second university is located, the second in childcare and a complete continuum of scientific researchers, doctors and workers, is dedicated to the health of the child. The building was officially opened in October 2007 . [four]

In 2011 , in addition to rare books on neurology that are more than 500 years old, books from the MacKimmie collection library were added. The collection extends educational experience in neurology and a digitized version of this collection allows people from all over the world to use them. The collection includes an original 1953 version called The Nature of Paper , where Nobel laureates James Watson and Francis Crick were the first to discover the double helix of DNA structure. It also includes the first neurological texts written in the 1600s by Thomas Willis , the man who first coined the term neurology and is known as the “father of neurology”. The collection is estimated at about $ 600,000. [five]

Canada’s Fifth Veterinary School, University of Kalgars, Department of Veterinary Medicine, opened in mid- 2008 . Research and higher education programs will focus on the strength and importance of Alberta, and less attention will be paid to areas of research that require special attention: animal health, equine health, ecosystem and public health, and research medicine. The first stream of students involved in the field of veterinary medicine doctors (DVM), began classes in the fall of 2008. [6]

Scholarships and Prizes

The University of Calgary offers many scholarships and student awards.

A significant high school scholarship is the Scholarship, which was introduced by the Alberta Government in 1980 . The essence of the scholarship of Alexander Rutherford is to identify and reward for outstanding scientific achievements at the level of senior high school and to encourage students to continue their studies. In order to qualify for these scholarships, the student must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who plans to attend full-time study for at least one semester . [7]

The university joined a heroic project, the scholarship program for which was developed by General Rick Hillier for families where members of the Canadian Armed Forces died. [8] Members of the Canadian forces and those killed during military service and active hostilities will have the support of the University of Kalgar to complete the training.

The Chancellor’s Bureau and Senate offer many scholarships, awards, and scholarships for students at the University of Calgary who have shown outstanding academic excellence and exceptional service to the internal and external community. [9]

The best students in the Shulich school of mechanical engineering receive the title of Schulich Scholars and receive the prestigious Shulich introductory scholarship. [10] The first cohort of Schulich Scholars graduated in 2010–2011. [eleven]

Bachelor of Medical Sciences students are eligible for a permanent scholarship from the O'Brien Center, which supports students throughout their education, as well as during extracurricular work and community participation in the struggle for their best scientists. [12]
