The political parties of the Maldives were legalized when parliament passed the party law on June 2, 2005. This happened after decades of authoritarian rule.

Political Party Bill
On March 12, 2013, President Maldives Wahid ratified the new Political Parties Bill, [1] replacing the previous multi-party system , approved in 2005 in the Maldives. According to the bill, the minimum number of members required to register a political party was increased from 3,000 to 10,000. With the ratification of the bill, all political parties that did not have a registered 10,000 members were dissolved. The National Unity Party , a member of the ruling coalition and led by the then-current President Wahid, was among 11 dissolved parties.
