The scientific name of the genus came from Greek, from the words helictos - “twisted” and trix - “hair”, because of the lower floral scales twisted in the lower part of the awns [3] .

Botanical description

Helictotrichon filifolium

Perennial herbaceous plants about 1 meter high with creeping underground shoots (or without them), sometimes forming dense turfs.

Stems erect, vaginas split to different degrees, without ears. Leaf blades linear or even narrowly linear, often bristle-like rolled or folded along, up to 12 mm wide.

The number of chromosomes is 7. [3]

Spread

Representatives of the genus are distributed outside the tropics in large parts of Eurasia, in North and South Africa. In the Asian and African tropics found in the highlands.

17 species grow on the territory of the former USSR. [3]

Meaning and application

All species of the genus are fodder pasture plants of poor quality, due to the high rigidity of leaf blades. Mesophilic alpine species are valued above others. [3]

Taxonomy

According to the Kew Royal Botanic Gardens, the genus includes 41 species [4] : according to other sources, the genus unites 90 species [5] .
