Biography
Born in 1834 in the village of Osinovka, Mogilev province .
In 1852 he graduated from the Vitebsk gymnasium , in 1859 - teacher courses at St. Petersburg University , passed the exam for the title of teacher of geography.
Since 1857 he taught Russian literature and geography at the 1st St. Petersburg gymnasium and the Mariinsky school .
In 1860–62, he was a teacher of primary classes and geography of the Smolny Institute .
Since 1865, teacher of higher pedagogical courses at the 2nd St. Petersburg military gymnasium .
In 1868 he was sent abroad to familiarize himself with teacher seminaries and lower city schools.
In 1870–78 he led the Kuban teacher’s seminary
In 1878 he was appointed director of the Transcaucasian (Gori) teacher's seminary .
Since 1883, he was an inspector of the school committee of the St. Petersburg City Council .
From 1888 to 1891 he was the editor of the magazine " Children's Reading ".
Proceedings
The main work can be considered a geographical anthology “Fatherland Studies”, published in six volumes in 1864-1887, which until 1917 was an obligatory part of the gymnasium course. Each volume of the publication has survived several reprints. All volumes of "Fatherland Studies" are built according to a single plan, in accordance with which a full historical, geographical and statistical description of a certain region is given. In addition to the articles of Semenov himself, the publication includes articles by the famous teacher Konstantin Ushinsky , Sergey Aksakov , articles from such famous books as "Geography" by Karl Ritter , "Picturesque Russia" by Pyotr Semenov-Tyan-Shansky and others.

- Volume 2. The southern region. Little Russia, New Russia, Crimea and the lands of the Don and Black Sea troops.
- Volume 3. The Caucasus and the Urals. It contains essays devoted to the Ural Mountains, Ural gold placers, a trip to the Iletskaya Zashchita, fishing, the life of the Ural Cossacks, Bashkirs and Kyrgyz.

- Volume 5. The Great Russian Territory.
- Volume 6, Turkestan Territory. Tom, first published in 1887, is dedicated at that time to the Turkestan Territory, which was recently annexed to Russia.
Dmitry Semenov has developed teaching methods of geography and the Russian language. He is the author of the first visual aids for grammar schools and a number of works on the history of education:

- The Gift of the Word, a book for reading in the lower grades of gymnasiums
He created a series of paintings for younger schoolchildren, “The Seasons,” the subject of which corresponded to the content of a number of sections of Ushinsky’s textbook, “Native Word,” and also developed teaching aids for teachers “Comments on Visual Learning from Pictures”.
The author of a number of articles (about 300) of pedagogical, biographical, critical and historical content in various periodicals.
