The early years

Philip Humber was born in the city of Nacodoches ( Texas ), spent his childhood in Carthage (Texas). Living in an area with an abundance of baseball fields, even in the courtyard of Philippe there was a closed area for practicing a bat with a bat [1] . At the age of 11, family friend Robert Ellis , who played in the Chicago White Sox farm system as a pitcher, invited Philip to visit the White Sox during their spring training in Florida [2] , where he met stars from the Chicago team like Frank Thomas and Ozzy Guillen .

Humber grew up in a town where baseball players were not the most popular football players. By 2004, Panola County teams in the Dixie League had won 15 state championships in the last 20 years, and Humber himself had won three league titles [1] .

Professional career

New York Mets (2006-2007)

In the 2004 Major League Baseball draft pick, the New York Mets chose the Humber in the first round under a common third number [3] . For observers, this choice turned out to be rather unexpected, as everyone assumed that the Mets would choose pitcher Jared Weaver or short-stop Stephen Drew , but the team decided to make a more “reliable” choice [4] . The Mets also considered Justin Verlander's candidacy, chosen by the Detroit Tigers in the second round [5] , and it was reported that they would have taken it if the Tigers had chosen Drew for the draft [6] .

January 11, 2005, two days before the start of the two-day Mets camp in Port St. Lucie ( Florida ), the Humber and Mets signed a five-year contract [7] . Both sides sought to complete the signing as soon as possible in connection with the entry into force of amendments to the federal tax law under which the new version received bonuses when signing the contract [8] . Information about the amount of bonuses and the amount of the contract in different sources was different. According to MLB.com Humber, the value of the contract with bonuses was $ 3.7 million [7] . Houston Chronicle announced a contract worth $ 4.2 million, of which 3 million bonuses [9] . Six months later, Lee The Jenkins of The New York Times wrote that the contract was worth $ 5 million with 3 million bonuses [10] . According to John Manuel of Baseball America, the maximum contract value was 5.116 million, of which only 4.2 million dollars were guaranteed [8] .

Humber on a pitcher hill during the 2007 New York Mets spring training camp

Before the start of the 2005 season, Baseball America placed Humber at number 50 on the list of the most promising newcomers. [11] At the Mets spring training camp [12], Philip entered into confrontation with team pitchers coach Rick Peterson , who wanted to change the training regimen for baseball players and change the throwing technique [5] . However, the club management sided with the young pitcher and he was allowed to throw as he was used to [13] .

After a short stay at the spring camp, Humber was sent to the St. Lucie Mets Class A farm club from the Florida State League . In his first professional club, Philip spent 14 matches in the starting lineup, winning 2 wins and 6 defeats with an average transmittance of 4.99. In July, he was transferred to the Binghampton Mets AA level farm club from the Eastern League [14] , where he spent one match in which he missed three points in four innings [15] . Already in the middle of that game, Philip felt severe pain in his elbow and was forced to leave the field. Further examination showed that the pitcher needed to have Tommy John surgery [16] [17] , which was later performed by James Andrews of the American Institute of Sports Medicine [18] . In the same year, two more pitchers of the Humber teammate on Rice underwent surgery [18] . Due to so many injuries of university pitchers, many began to accuse trainer Rice Graham of improper training and overloading young athletes, but he denied everything, claiming that on the contrary he suspended them from speaking before signing contracts [18] . Despite throwing a hand, Baseball America said Humber was considered one of the top 20 young Florida League players [19] and fifth in the Mets system [20] .

On March 8, Humber was invited to the Mets training camp for lower league players [21] . Having undergone rehabilitation after the operation, Humber resumed his appearances for St. Lucie in 2006 and for seven matches in the starting lineup his victory and defeat rate was 3-1, and ERA - 2.37 [16] . On July 31, 2006, a year after the operation, Humber was again transferred to Binghampton Mets [16] , where he showed a 2–2 result with an average transmittance of 2.88. Thanks to a successful performance in the lower leagues in early September, Philip was invited to the main team of the Mets [22] . His debut in the Premier League took place on September 24, 2006 [23] , when he entered the position of a reliever and spent two innings [24] . However, due to the operation, his throws were no longer as fast as before [5] . Humber spent the fall in the Arizona Autumn League , but due to shoulder tendenitis he was forced to stop performing [25] .

Before the start of the 2007 season, Humber was considered the fourth best young Mets player according to Baseball America [26] . “Mets” invited nine pitchers to spring training, who were supposed to compete for five places in the club’s starting rotation [27] . The favorites were Oliver Perez , Tom Glein , Orlando Hernandez and John Mayne . In addition, veterans Aaron Sele , Chen Ho Park and George Sosa , as well as two young pitchers Humber and Mike Pelfrey attended the training camp [28] . However, following the training camp, Philip was sent to the New Orleans Zephyrs Farm Club from the Pacific Coast League [29] . Speaking for his new club, the Humber won 139 innings, showing a score of 11-9 with an average transmittance of 4.27. For 25 games, he missed 129 hits and allowed to make 44 runs [30] . At the end of the season, Humber took fourth place in the league in victories and tenth in the ERA. In addition, on April 22, he was named the League Week Pitcher [31] . At this time, he missed just two points in 13 innings [32] [33] and helped his team make a combined know-how in the game against Iowa Cubs [34] [35] .

September 2, Humber was again called up to the main team [24] . At first, the Mets management decided to put it in the starting rotation [36] , but in the end Pelfrey [34] gave this place. Therefore, he spent the first games after his return as a reliever [37] . However, the Mets results continued to deteriorate, and in this situation the team manager decided to give a chance to the young pitcher. Humber’s debut in the starting lineup at Major League Baseball took place on September 26, 2007 in a game against the Washington Nationals [38] . Although at the beginning of the game, the New York team took the score 6: 2, the Humber for five innings missed 5 points, and the Mets eventually lost with the score 9: 6. The unsuccessful game of the newcomer led to a conversation that its release in the starting lineup became a symbol of the Mets despair. So George Vexy wrote in The New York Times : “How did they get that far?” How can the result of the entire Mets season depend on the young pitcher Philip Humber, who hadn’t left the starting lineup until last night? ” [39] . As a result, for three games in the Mets in the 2007 season, his ERA was 7.71 [40] .

Minnesota Twins (2008-2009)

Humber as part of Minnesota Twins , 2008

At the end of the 2007 season, the Mets began to negotiate with Minnesota Twins on the possible exchange of Humber and several other young players for two-time Sai Yang prize winner Johan Santana . Twins knew that Santana would become a free agent next year and was unlikely to renew the contract with the club, so they were looking for an opportunity to exchange it [41] . On February 2, 2008, the Mets exchanged the Humber together with Carlos Gomez , Kevin Mulvi and Deolis Guerra in the Twins for Santana [30] . At the time of the exchange, Baseball America considered Guerro, Mulvie, and Humber the second, third, and seventh most promising Mets player, respectively [42] .

During spring training, the Twins identified Humber to replace Santana in the clubhouse [43] . Trying to get a place in the starting lineup of the new club, Philip spent 11 dry innings in the games of the Grapefoot League [44] , and by the end of March his ERA in spring training was 1.29 [45] .

Humber spent most of the 2008 season at the Twins Farm Club at Rochester Red Wings , an AAA international league. Philip did not have a start to the season at Red Wings - in the first nine games in the starting lineup he did not win a single match and suffered 5 defeats, and his ERA was 5.83 [46] . In the future, his game performance improved and for the 31 games of the season his result was 10 wins and 8 losses with an ERA of 4.56 [47] . Moreover, in August he won the Pitcher of the Month award among lower league players [48] . Thanks to this, in August 2008 he was called up to the main team of Twins, in which he played five matches - all as a reliever [49] . At the end of the 2008 season, according to his contract, he could not be sent back to the lower leagues without first being put up for draft refuseniks, where he could be chosen by any other team [50] .

Therefore, Humber took part in the first game of the season of 2009 , having entered the position of long-reliever [51] [52] . The start of the championship did not work out for Philip and for 4 1 ⁄ 3 inning his ERA was 12.46 [49] . And on April 17, 2009 he was expelled from the main structure, giving a chance to other clubs to take it for themselves. However, no team showed interest in the pitcher and he was sent to Rochester [52] . In August 2009, due to an injury, Francisco Liriano [53] Humber was called up to the main team, but ten days later he was sent back [54] . At the end of the 2009 season, Humber became a free agent. [55]

Kansas City Royals (2010)

On December 15, 2009, Humber signed a contract with the Kansas City Royals organization and was invited to participate in spring training [56] . There he failed to show his best side - in four matches his ERA was 11.74 and he was sent to the collection of players in the lower leagues [57] .

He was included in the PCL Omaha Royals Farm Club. On June 10, 2010, in one of the matches, an unpleasant incident happened to him - during one of the shots, rivals Luis Cruz hit the ball right into the pitcher, hitting him in the face. After the hit, Humber was able to independently reach the dagout, and later he was taken to the hospital, where 18 stitches were applied [58] . After recovering, Humber returned to performances and on August 1 was even named pitcher of the PCL week. This award was brought to him by the July 30 match against the Nashville Sounds , in which he played the full game, missing four hits and making 7 strikeouts [59] [60] .

Chicago White Sox (2011-2012)

In December 2010, the Royals refused the services of Humber and he was included in the Auckland Athletics , which at that time had free space [61] . However, later the Athletics decided to exclude him in order to make way for Guillermo Moskoko [62] . On January 18, 2011, the Chicago White Sox incorporated Philip into its membership [63] , signing a one-year contract for $ 500,000 with the pitcher [13] . In the offseason, he worked with the team's pitcher trainer Don Cooper , who helped him master the slider instead of cut-fastball and improve the mechanics of the other throws [2] [13] .

Already in the third game of the season, Humber made his debut for his new team, having entered the position of a receiver. Having made only two throws, both of which his opponents successfully repulsed, he was sent back to the bench [64] . Soon, however, due to Jake Peavy 's injury, the White Sox were forced to include him in the starting rotation of the pitchers [65] . On April 9, 2011, he won his first victory with Chicago [66] , which pleasantly surprised the White Sox leadership [2] . On April 25th, in his sixth start of the season, until the seventh inning he kept a chance for a know-hitter against the New York Yankees in their home stadium, but missed a hit from Alex Rodriguez [65] [67] . As a result, he played seven dry innings. On June 26, in the game against the Washington Nationals , he again went to a hitless game until the sixth inning, but, having missed the two-pointer home run from Danny Espinosa , he recorded a defeat in his asset [68] . By early July, he was the leader of Major League Baseball in the number of innings (103 2 ⁄ 3 ), and his result was 8-4 with an ERA of 2.69, and he was one of the contenders for participating in the all-star match [69] . But at the end of August, he saw a recession [70] , which was aggravated by an injury - on August 18 the bounced ball hit his face, after which he was transferred to the list of injured [71] [72] . After recovering from his injury, he played one game in the International League for Charlotte Knights [73] [74] , after which, after returning to Major League Baseball, he spent seven dry innings [75] . Thus, the 2011 season was the first full season for the Humber in the starting lineup. In the championship, he won 9 victories and suffered 9 defeats, and the ERA was 3.75 [76] .

Houston Astros (2013)

On November 30, 2012, the Houston Astros selected Humber from the list of refuseniks [77] and included him in the starting rotation of pitchers for the 2013 season [78] . However, after he started the season with a score of 0-7 and an ERA of 8.82, Eric Bedard [79] took his place at the start, and after he lost the eighth, and his ERA dropped to 9, 59, The Astros put it up for auction [80] . While the team was looking for an opportunity to exchange, Humber acted as a receiver at the Oklahoma City Redhawks in the PCL. On August 12, the Astros traded one of their pitchers, Wesley Wright, to the Tampa Bay Flight and returned Philip to the vacant seat. [81] On October 3, 2013, Astros did not use the option to extend the contract for $ 3 million, but instead paid Philip a guaranteed salary of $ 500,000 and fired him [82] .

Auckland Athletics

On November 2, 2013, Humber signed a contract with Oakland Athletics to play in the lower leagues and was invited to participate in spring training [83] . Athletics later sent him to the Sacramento River Cats from the PCL [84] .

Kia Tigers

On December 6, 2014, Humber signed a contract with the Kia Tigers Korean baseball club [85] . At Taiges, his results were not very good - for the 50 2 ⁄ 3 inning his ERA was 6.75 and on July 20, 2015 the team expelled him from his squad [86] .

San Diego Padres

On December 10, 2015, Humber signed a contract with the San Diego Padres team to perform in her farm system [87] . March 29, 2016, realizing that he could not break into the main structure of the Padres, Humber announced the completion of his professional career [88] .

Game Style

The Humber Arsenal has five innings. He throws a fast-sim fastball at a speed of 89-92 miles per hour (143-148 km / h), a to-sim fastball (89-92 miles per hour (143-148 km / h)), a slider (more than 80 miles in hour), Chengjap 9 (more than 80 miles per hour) and 12-6 curvball (78-81 miles per hour (126-130 km / h)). Against right-handed sluggers, he prefers to throw a slider, and against left-handed people - changjap and curvball. He also loves throwing curvball with two strikes. [89]

Personal life

In November 2007, Humber married a girl named Kristan [43] , whom they had been introduced to by their mutual friends in 2005. [90] At the time of Humber's perfect play, his wife was in her ninth month of pregnancy [91] [92] . May 1, the couple had a son - John Gregory [93] .

Humber is a registered member of the Republican Party . An excerpt from Colossians 3:23 [94] is written on his baseball glove. In the offseason of 2011/12, he, along with Brett Carroll, conducted a charity mission in the Philippines , where they told children about baseball and Christianity [95] .

Philip's close friend is another Major League Baseball pitcher - Josh Tomlin . Tomlin grew up in Texas and often played baseball against Humber during his school years, and both often trained together during the offseason [96] . Humber currently resides in Tyler [97] .
