Alexey Nikitich Hergozersky ( 1812 - February 26, 1891 , Vologda ) is a Russian spiritual writer and teacher .

Biography

The son of the clerk of the Olonets diocese . In the same diocese he received lower education (at the Kargopol Theological School) and secondary education (1829–1835) and in 1835 entered the St. Petersburg Theological Academy , completed the course in 1839 with a candidate of theology degree.

While still studying at the academy, under the influence of the lectures of the famous professor of the Jewish language and his literature, Archpriest Gerasim Pavsky , he became interested in scripture and was one of the most active employees of the professor in translating the Holy Books of the Old Testament from Jewish into Russian .

On September 27, 1839, he was appointed a teacher in church history and scripture classes at the Vologda Theological Seminary. For 40 years he was engaged in pedagogical activity. In 1881 he retired.

Literary and scientific activity

In handwritten form were notes by A. Hergozersky on almost all the books of the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments and specially processed articles on various subjects in the field of the same science. Only two quite large books of works by A. Hergozersky were published: Isagogika , or Introduction to the Books of the Holy Scriptures of the New Testament, (St. Petersburg, 1860) and Review of the Prophetic Books of the Old Testament (St. Petersburg, 1873; 4th ed. , ib., 1899). The first of these books, intended as a textbook for theological seminaries, in its time presented a complete novelty in the field of theological textbooks and soon went on sale; and the second, despite the appearance of some other works of this kind already at that time, the Study Committee at the Holy Synod awarded the prize and recognized it necessary to introduce theological seminaries as a textbook.
