However, with the opening of the first resort in the Maldives in 1972, tourism in the Maldives began to flourish. The first tourist group arrived in the Maldives in February of that year. She stayed in the capital Male and spent 12 days on the islands.

Tourism development in the Maldives began with the advent of only two resorts, designed for 280 people, in the village of Kurumba and on the island of Bandos, the resort on the island of Kurumba was the first of them. Today, there are more than 105 resorts located on numerous atolls subject to the Republic of Maldives. Over the past decade, the number of tourists visiting the Maldives has been growing steadily. In 2009, local guest houses began to appear, this was due to the fact that tourists were officially allowed to stay among the local population, and was not exclusively on private resort islands. Now more than 900,000 tourists visit the Maldives annually.

Resort Description

Tourist resort in the Maldives.

The tourist resort in the Maldives consists of an exclusive hotel on the island that is its property, with a population of tourists and their staff, there are no local people or houses on such islands.

Such islands, intended for the development of tourism, usually have dimensions of about 800 to 200 meters and consist of sand and corals, I rise to a maximum height of 2 meters above sea level. In addition to its beaches, each island has its own “home reef”, serving as a coral garden and a natural aquarium for scuba divers and divers. The shallow depth of the “house reefs” also protects swimmers from ocean waves and strong tidal currents outside the “house”.

Buildings in a typical Maldivian resort include rooms and suites reserved for tourists, restaurants, cafeterias, shops, lounges, bars, discos and diving schools. Part of the island also contains the dwellings of staff working at the resort and auxiliary facilities such as food facilities, generators, laundries and treatment facilities. The island also has shops offering items such as souvenirs and artifacts.
