Distribution

Afrotropics. Endemic to South Africa ( Eastern Cape , Western Cape ). They live in the litter layer of coastal forests [1] .

Description

Medium-sized short- winged staphylinids , one of the small representatives of a kind, length from 11 to 18 mm. Head Length (HL): 1.3–2.0 mm; head width (HW): 1.4–2.1; pronotum length (PL): 2.4–3.4; pronotum width (PW): 2.3–3.2 mm. Vth abdominal tergite with two basal carinae well developed; the head has the largest width behind the eyes. The main body color is from black to brown, the abdomen with a metallic luster (legs and antennae are lighter). Flightless, wings reduced to small residues. Head without distinct neck constriction. The frontoclypeal suture and infraorbital keel are well developed. The first segment of the antennae is twice as long as the second and third segments combined; the third segment is longer than the second, and the fourth is shorter than the third. Pronotum wider than head. Pronotum disk smooth. The front edge of the prosternum is straight. The formula of the legs is 5-5-5. The legs and claws of the legs are relatively long. All legs are covered with spiked setae. Abdomen flatly flattened, almost parallel-sided. Protothergal glands in the 1st abdominal segment. One pair of paratergites on the VIIth abdominal segment (two pairs on the III – VI segments). IX sternite and male aedeagus are symmetrical [1] .

Systematics

The species was first described during a genus revision conducted in 2005 by American coleopterologists Alexei Solodovnikov and Alfred Newton ( Alfred F. Newton ; Department of Zoology, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago , Illinois , USA ). Together with the species Arrowinus minutus Solodovnikov and Newton, 2005 , Arrowinus phaenomenalis Bernhauer, 1935 and Arrowinus relictus Solodovnikov and Newton, 2005 forms the genus Arrowinus , which was previously included in the Quediina subtribe of the tribe Staphylinini , but later it was proved that it forms a separate and independent sister to all members of the tribe Staphylinini , for which a new tribe Arrowinini was installed. This is one of the primitive and phylogenetically isolated members of the Staphylininae subfamily [1] [3] .

Arrowinus peckorum is named after Canadian entomologists professors Yarmila Kukalova-Peck ( Jarmila Kukalova´-Peck ; Dept. of Earth Sciences, Carleton University, Ottawa , Canada ) and Stewart Peck, who participated in the discovery of the type series. It differs from related species in the number of carinae on the fourth and fifth abdominal tergites, and the shape of the head and pronotum [1] .
