Distribution

Afrotropics. Endemic to South Africa ( Eastern Cape , KwaZulu-Natal , Western Cape ). They live in the litter layer of plain and mountain forests [2] .

Description

Medium size and large short- winged staphylinids , length from 11 to 33 mm. The main body color is from black to brown (legs and antennae are lighter). Flightless, wings reduced to small residues. Head without distinct neck constriction. The frontoclypeal suture and infraorbital keel are well developed. The first segment of the antennae is twice as long as the second and third segments combined; the third segment is longer than the second, and the fourth is shorter than the third. Pronotum wider than head. Pronotum disk smooth. The front edge of the prosternum is straight. The formula of the legs is 5-5-5. The legs and claws of the legs are relatively long. All legs are covered with spiked setae. Abdomen flatly flattened, almost parallel-sided. Protothergal glands in the 1st abdominal segment. One pair of paratergites on the VIIth abdominal segment (two pairs on the III – VI segments). IX sternite and male aedeagus are symmetrical [2] .

Systematics

In an audit of the genus (and descriptions of three new species) conducted in 2005 by American coleopterologists Alexei Solodovnikov and Alfred Newton ( Alfred F. Newton ; Department of Zoology, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago , Illinois , USA ), it was proved that Arrowinus does not belong to the tribe Quediina of the tribe Staphylinini (where it was previously included), but forms a separate and independent taxon sister to all members of the tribe Staphylinini , for which a new tribe Arrowinini was established. This is one of the primitive and phylogenetically isolated members of the Staphylininae subfamily [2] [4] .
