Agnew, Paul

Paul Agnew ( born Paul Agnew ; born 1964, Glasgow ) is a British Scottish opera singer ( tenor ) and conductor.

Biography

He received his musical education at Magdalen College, University of Oxford . He worked in the ensembles Consort of Musicke, Tallis Scholars, Sixteen and Gothic Voices, and began his solo career in the 1990s.

Agnew's career has for many years been associated with the Prosperous Arts ensemble and its director, William Christie . Together with “Prosperous Arts”, Agnew played the roles of Jason in Medea by Charpentier , Hippolytus “ Hippolyte and Arisia ” by Rameau , and recorded the parts in “ Descent of Orpheus to Hell ” and “ Versailles Pleasures ” by Charpentier; Handel's “ Acise and Galatea ” and the Rameau Grand Motets (Gramophone award of 1995 for the best vocals performed by ancient music). In 2007, under the direction of Agnew, the ensemble performed works by Antonio Vivaldi , for the first time “Prosperous Arts” was not conducted by William Christie. From that moment, Agnew combines solo career and conducting, along with Jonathan Cohen being an assistant conductor to William Christie in his work with the Prosperous Arts Orchestra.
