Biography

Micheletto, known as the executioner Cesare Borgia , from early childhood was in a close relationship with the latter. Their friendship continued during their studies at the University of Pisa [1] .

On December 23, 1499, Don Michele de Corella and Bishop of Trani were appointed governors of the city of Forli, recently captured by the army of Cesare Borgia. As the historian Rafael Sabatini reports: “Fanatically loyal to his master, Captain de Corella kept the soldier at least as strict as the duke himself, and there was no need to worry about the reliability of the rear [2] ”.

On August 18, 1500 in Rome, Micheletto strangled Alfonso of Aragon , the second husband of Lucrezia Borgia .

In March 1502, Corella was appointed by Cesare ruler of Piombino [3] . In October of the same year, he and Ramiro de Lorca were sent to Pesaro [4] . On the way there, he heard about the rebellion that had arisen in Fossombrone and Pergol , and ventured to plunder these cities, thereby punishing the rioters.

Niccolo Machiavelli describes the conversation between Micheletto Corella and Oliverotto da Fermo on December 31, 1502 : “Then Don Michele galloped forward and, approaching Oliverotto, told him that the soldiers could not be taken away from the barracks, as the people of the duke would take them away; therefore, he suggested that he place them in the barracks and together go to meet the duke [5] . ”

On the same night, Vitellozzo Vitelli and Oliverotto da Fermo, seized by the people of Cesare, were strangled, allegedly by Micheletto himself (Machiavelli hints at this in his letter of December 31).

However, at one point the Borgia case began to deteriorate: in August 1503, Pope Alexander VI died, and even his son Cesare was dying. Soon the post of the pontiff was taken by the sworn enemy of Borgia, Giuliano della Rovere , who took the name of Julius II.

In November 1503, Michele da Corella and Taddeo della Volpe headed north with a cavalry numbering seven hundred horsemen to help Romagli (the people of Romagna) Cesare Borgia, but they were defeated in Tuscany by troops of [6] . Once captured, Micheletto was imprisoned first in Florence , and then in Rome , where he was interrogated and tortured [7] . However, he did not reveal the secrets he knew about Borgia [8] .

In 1505, he was released by Pope Julius II , and, thanks to Machiavelli Corella's petition, he received the post of in Florence. He held this post for two years until 1507 [9] .

Mikeletto Corella was killed in Milan in January 1508 by a peasant, although the customer of the murder remains unknown [10] .

Historian Raphael Sabatini describes Mikeletto Corella: “Corella was a mercenary who accompanied Cesare from the earliest days of his military career — the one that is believed to have strangled Alfonso of Aragon by order of Cesare. As a rule, he is considered a Spaniard and is called Michelotto, or Don Miguel; however, Alvizi associates the name of Corella with his possible Venetian origin, and reports that by fulfilling the orders of Cesare, he had made many enemies for himself. ”
