Secure : Rhododendron periclymenoides

Rhododendron holoflora - a branchy deciduous shrub or small tree reaching 5 m in height. Young twigs covered with simple pubescence or bare, red-brown. The leaves are obovate or ovate to elliptical, up to 11 cm long, with an integral ciliary edge, the upper surface is bare or rarely pubescent, the lower surface is often rarely pubescent, less often naked. Petiole leaf with pubescence.

The inflorescence is racemose, consists of 6-15 flowers with a pungent smell, blooming before the leaves appear or at the same time. Corolla bright pink or with a white limb and a pink tube. Calyx is very small, sepals are unequal, not more than 4 mm long, glabrous, pubescent or, rarely, glandular. Stamens up to 7 cm long, unequal, in an amount of 5. Pestle densely pubescent.

The fruit is an ovoid-cylindrical capsule 12-25 × 3-6 mm with chestnut-brown oblong-spindle-shaped seeds .

Ecology

Rhododendron grows in dry and humid forests on the hills, along the banks of streams, along the borders of swamps.

Range

Rhododendron is holoflora distributed in eastern North America. The northern border of the range is Maine , New Hampshire and Vermont (in these three states isolated locations are known), the southern - Georgia , Alabama and South Carolina . To the west, the range of the species reaches Tennessee and Illinois .

Taxonomy

Originally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1753 as part of the genus Azalea in the broad sense of Azalea lutea . In 1762, A. lutea was divided by him into three species, among which Azalea nudiflora . Since another species called Rhododendron luteum was described in the genus Rhododendron in 1830, it was not possible to transfer this species to this genus while preserving the original epithet. Due to the abandonment of the use of A. lutea in favor of A. nudiflora, all names based on the latter were automatically unusable. Thus, the only useable name was the name with an epithet taken from Azalea periclymenoides from the book of Flora boreali-americana by Andre Michaud in 1803.
