Hofmann, Johann Jacob

Johann Jacob Hofmann (Hoffmann [1] ; German: Johann Jacob Hofmann ; 1635 , Basel - May 10, 1706 , ibid.) - Swiss historian, theologian, professor of Greek; the author of the four-volume Latin encyclopedia “ Lexicon Universale ” (1677, 2 volumes and additional 1683, 2 volumes), devoted mainly to antiquity (classical antiquity).

He has lived all his life in his hometown. The son of a teacher, from childhood showed erudition, at the age of 20 he graduated from the study of theology. For health reasons, he could not take the place of the parish priest, he gave private lessons until he was appointed professor of Greek at the University of Basel in 1667.

From 1684 until his death in 1706 he taught history there.

In 1677 he published Lexicon Universale , an encyclopedia in four volumes of 1,000 pages each (supplemented in 1683 and 1698). Written in Latin, it contained extensive data on natural history, geography , zoology , botany , mineralogy , cosmology , genealogy , mythology , everyday life with its activities, customs and traditions, and much more.

Interesting Facts

  • Johann Jacob identified the Gelvikon tribe (see Lugia), mentioned by Tacitus in " Germany ", with the Gillevion tribe (hilleviones) in Pliny [2] .
