Johansson was born in Buden, but grew up in Kiruna . She had a daughter with developmental disabilities, and this was the reason she began to write. She constantly wondered why her child was not like the others. She began to write at night to get away from harsh reality.
Johansson made her debut in 1961 with the book Holken. Johansson's first books were carefree, and only later did she start writing about bullying, bullying, and racism. She believed that children are most interested in books about the problems they face. Her books often talk about children who were bullied or teased. In her book "As if I was not there," the plot unfolds in 1930. The main character Elina is a Finnish-speaking girl who went to a Swedish school at a time when it was forbidden to speak Finnish. An escalating conflict occurs between Elina and her strict teacher. The book was filmed in the form of the film " Elina, as if I was not there " in 2003.
In 1964, Cherstin Johansson took part in the May Yodman documentary, A Day with Katarina . In a documentary, she told what it is like to have a child with mental retardation. This was the first time that the lives of those who had a child with mental retardation were shown on television. In the film, Cherstin Johansson asked a difficult question: “What will happen to Katarina when her parents are no more?”.
From 1989 to 1997, Johansson worked at Department No. 9 at the Swedish Children's Academy .
