History
The idea of creating a monument to the Jewish writer Sholom Aleichem was suggested to the sculptor Yuri Chernov by one of his friends. Chernov designed the model of the monument, cast it in bronze and even sent it to the Russian, Canadian and American Jewish communities, however, he met neither understanding nor interest in financing the creation of the monument, although many liked it. At one of the exhibitions, the sketch of the monument was seen by the then mayor of Moscow, Yuri Luzhkov, and approved the installation of the monument in Moscow. A sponsor was also found - the head of the company Russian Gold A. Tarantsev, but he agreed to pay only a third of the cost of the work.
Joseph Kobzon, in response to Chernov’s complaint about the lack of funds allocated by the sponsor, told the sculptor:
Did the Jews give you a lot of money? So fit into what the Russians give ... [1]
For this reason, the project had to make serious changes in order to meet the allocated amount - the costs of granite and earthwork were reduced. As a result, the monument was inaugurated on December 26, 2001. G.I. Kopans acted as the architect of the monument. The monument was donated to Moscow. The place of installation of the monument at the intersection of Bolshaya and Malaya Bronnaya Streets was chosen because the Jewish Theater was working nearby since 1921, in which plays were staged based on the works of Sholom Aleichem. There is also a synagogue on Bolshaya Bronnaya.
