Story
The action takes place in 1950. Nine-year-old Elina lives with her younger brothers, sisters and mother in Turnedalen in northern Sweden, near the border with Finland . Her father, whom she loved very much, died of tuberculosis several years ago. Elina finds solace in her wanderings in dangerous swamps and conducts conversations with her late father. Elina also suffered from tuberculosis, but recovered. Due to a long illness, Elina is forced to stay in school for the second year and go to the same class with her younger sister Irma, where the lessons are taught by the strict teacher Tura Holm. Tura Holm forbids speaking Finnish at school and punishes children for this, believing that only those who speak Swedish can succeed in life. Elina's family belongs to the Finnish-speaking minority, which causes disapproval of the teacher, who begins to persecute Elina for speaking in Finnish in the classroom. Elina’s mother, sister and new young teacher become mediators between Elina and Froken Holm, trying to resolve this conflict.
