On June 2, 2010, at the Comerica Park in Detroit , Michigan , Armando Galarraga , the pitcher of the Detroit Tigers Major League Baseball team, was close to becoming the 21st pitcher in the history of the Premier League who played the perfect game . In the match against Cleveland Indians , Galarraga knocked 26 batters out of the game, but his hope for a perfect game was lost when first base judge Jim Joyce made the wrong decision, believing that 27th Beater Indians Jason Donald knocked outground ball , I reached the first base. Thus, Galarraga finished the game with a one-bit chat, and his team won 3-0. In the match, the pitcher played against 28 batters, threw 88 innings (67 strikes and 21 bol ) by making 3 strike-outs . Subsequently, this match was called "28-outs perfect game" [1] , "Imperfect game" [2] or simply "Game Galarragi" [3] .
Realizing that he had made the wrong decision, after the game, Joyce asked Galarragi, who reacted with understanding to his mistake and pardoned the judge, for forgiveness. In a post-match interview with journalists, Armando said without irony: “No one is perfect.” [4] . Later, Galarraga became one of many people in the Major League Baseball who spoke out in support of Joyce. After the game, the referee and pitcher met with the journalists and Joyce apologized for his mistake. Such decent behavior of the two participants in the event brought them wide approval and praise.
Match Progress
Already in the second inning, the Tigers scored their first point after Miguel Cabrera 's solo home run . The team scored two more points in the eighth inning. At first, Austin Jackson and Johnny Damon were beaten out on a single , and then the players were able to reach the home base after the single Magglio Ordonez and mistakes in throwing Shin So Chu [5] .
At the top of the ninth inning, center-fielder Tigers was able to catch a heavy ball on the run after hitting Cleveland's player Mark Grudzilanek and retaining hope of a perfect game. This catch was subsequently compared to Devane Ways' incredible catch in the ninth inning of the perfect Mark Bürle game in 2009 [6] . Indians second slugger Mike Redmond knocked out ground out Then Jason Donald fought off the infield center, right at Miguel Cabrera. Galarraga at this time moved from the pitcher's slide to the first base, where Cabrera handed the ball to him, and almost simultaneously with him the base reached Donald. However, first base judge Jim Joyce recorded a saf , assuming that the batter hit the base before the ball was trapped by Armando. Later, the video reporter showed that Miguel Cabrera managed to make the transfer to Galarrage, who was covering the first base, so he knocked Donald out of the game. Because of the passive defense game , Donald managed to run to the second, and then to third base, when Trevor Crow, the fourth slugger, hit the bat. As a result, Crowe knocked out a ground-out, and the game ended with the score 3: 0 in favor of the Tigers [5] .

Place in history
Just four days before this match, Roy Halliday played the perfect game against the Philadelphia Phillies , and twenty days before this event, Dallas Braden played the perfect game against the Oakland Athletics [8] . These two games were the first in the modern era, held not only in one season, but also in one month. During the perfect game of Braden Joyce worked as a judge at second base.
Twenty days between the perfect games of Braden and Holliday were the smallest time interval between perfect matches since 1880 and there was a chance that for the first time in the history of Major League Baseball there will be three such events in such a small period of time. If the match Galarragi sued correctly, then a four-day gap between two perfect games would have broken the 130-year record [9] , for the first time in history, three consecutive no-hitters would become perfect games, three perfect games occurred in one season (in 2012 this achievement has obeyed Philip Humber , Matt Cain and Felix Hernandez ), the first three perfect games occurred less than a month, the first four perfect games occurred in less than a year (in July 2009, a reliever, " Chicago White Sox ' Mark Bührle played a perfect game) and first e four perfect games held in a series of five hou-Hitter [8] .
This match would also be the first perfect game in the 110-year history of the Tigers [10] . 83 submissions made before the judge's wrong decision would be the least number of innings in a perfect game since 1908. The almost perfect game of Galarragi was the first after the match of Mike Massina , which took place on September 2, 2001, when the perfect match fell apart at the 27th slugger Karla Everett [11] . The match was the third case when the Tigers reliever was so close to the perfect game: on April 15, 1983, Matt Wilcox was unable to play successfully against the 27th slugger [12] , and on August 5, 1932, Tommy Bridges also stumbled on the 27th slugger [13] .
The almost perfect game of Galarragi became the tenth in the history of the big league, when the 27th striker was on the way to this achievement. Only once before this case, the wrong decision of the judge, which was later considered erroneous, did not allow the pitcher to play the perfect match. On July 4, 1908, New York Giants pitcher Hook Wiltz knocked out 26 batters from the game and, with the score 2-2, hit the ball in Philadelphia Phillies pitcher George McQuillan . Later, Judge Sai Riegler admitted that he should have counted the previous serve as a strike, thus ending the inning. As a result, the Wiltz team won with a score of 1: 0, and his shot that hit the batter separated him from the perfect game [14] [15] [16] [17]
Impact
Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce
After receiving a pass from Cabrera and stepping on first base, Galarraga began to celebrate his achievement. But when he heard the judge’s decision, he froze for a while, then he smiled wryly and returned to the pitcher's hill [18] [19] . After the game, Galarraga told reporters that this is currently the best game in his life and that Joyce “probably feels worse than he does. Nobody is perfect. I understand. I give him credit for saying “I must speak with you.” You will never hear the referee say this after the game. I embraced him " [4] . He also told reporters: “I know that I have completed a perfect game. I believe I deserve it. I played the perfect game. Maybe they will not write about it in books, but someday I will tell my son: “Once I played a perfect game.” And I will show him the record ” [20] , and later called his speech“ the 28-strike perfect match ” [21] . Manager "Tigers" Jim Leyland added: "This is a blatant outrage. Jim [Joyce] is a cool guy. It sounds crazy, but after watching the replay no one felt worse than him. Because of the heat of passions, I shouted a little after the game. I do not think that you are as angry at the judge as a boy could have been - and he would have the right to that. ” Leyland also said that Joyce’s decision was a “human factor in the game.” [4]
Joyce, an experienced judge with 22 years of experience, after the game, after watching the video replay with tears in his eyes, said: “My decision was wrong” and added that he took the perfect game from the baseball player. Joyce said that at that moment he thought that Donald had time to touch the base before Galarraga received the ball and was sure of this until he looked at the replay [22] . The judge added later: “I didn’t want this moment to be my 15 minutes of fame. I would like these 15 minutes of fame to fall into my great decision in the World Series. I hope that my 15 minutes of glory is over now ” [21] .
Before the game the next day, Joyce met Galarraga near the home base with tears in his eyes to get information about the composition of the Tigers for the game. The men shook hands and Joyce patted the pitcher on the shoulder [23] [10] . Joyce's responsibility and regret for his deed and the worthy behavior of Galarragi received wide approval and praise for turning the unfavorable situation into a positive moment [19] [24] .
In Major League Baseball
Many people related to the Major League Baseball have expressed support for Joyce and noted his exceptional reputation. [24] New York Yankees pitcher Mariano Rivera said: “This happened to the best league judge. With the best. And with a real gentleman ... Sorry for both of them, the pitcher and the judge. But I will tell you, he is the best in baseball and a good guy. Just a pity. ” [25] Former Chicago Cubs reliever Milt Pappas commented on this game: “I would say to [Galarrage], I understand you. In the history of baseball there were only 20 perfect games. I was in the same situation with the judge. But in the end, I at least played a know-hitter. You are not. You played an outstanding game. At least you were pleased that the judge confessed his mistake. But it did not help in your situation ” [26] . Pappas himself fell into a similar situation on September 2, 1972. At bat, the 27th slugger Larry Stol and Judge Bruce Fromming, with two bolas and two strikes, called the fifth, the border pitch, a bol, on the bat, thus allowing Table to make a walk. The former Yankees reliever, Don Larsen , who played the fourth perfect game in the modern era and was the only one in the history of the World Series on October 8, 1956, said: “I feel sorry for the judge and I am very sorry for the guy. Right now, he is probably thinking on whose side God is. ” [23]
The wrong decision of the judge led to the fact that many sports journalists began to encourage more frequent use of video replays, which at that time were used only to view controversial home runs [27] [28] [29] . Many journalists also appealed to Major League Baseball Commissioner Badu Siliga to cancel the decision of Joyce and officially declared this match as perfect [18] [23] . On June 3, Seelig announced that Major League Baseball would consider using video replays and refereeing, but he did not say anything specific about Joyce. League officials later told The Associated Press that the judge’s decision would not be reviewed [30] . For his achievements in this game, July 7, Galarraga was named Player of the Week of the American League [31] . Later, the items from this game: first base, ball and Galarragi sneakers were displayed at the Baseball Hall of Fame [32] .
Less than two weeks after the event, ESPN The Magazine published the results of an anonymous survey conducted among 100 current Major League Baseball players. When asked who is the best judge in Major League Baseball, 53% of respondents said that Joyce. The second place with a delay of 19 votes was taken by Tim McKelland . One of the respondents said: “The saddest thing about the Galarragi game is that Jim Joyce really is one of the best judges ... He always judges honestly and so many players love him. Everyone makes mistakes and it's terrible what happened to him. ” Moreover, 86% of the polled players expressed their approval of Siliga’s decision not to overturn the judge’s decision and 77% of the players were against entering the replay view in contentious situations at the bases [33] .
Outside of baseball
On June 3, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said during the morning press conference: "I hope that baseball will reward this pitcher with a perfect game" and joked, adding that the White House "will work on an order to that effect." He added: “The way the judge took responsibility and the way the pitcher accepted it, such decent behavior was demonstrated there. I think it requires a big heart ... The way someone admits that he made a mistake and how someone takes an apology from someone who made a mistake. I think this is a good baseball lesson. And a good lesson for Washington " [34] . Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm also issued a statement saying: “I, Jennifer M. Granholm, Governor of Michigan, declare that Armando Galarraga played the perfect game” [35] .
Former SportsCenter presenter Keith Olberman dedicated a part of a special edition of his political show Countdown entitled The Worst Man in the World, in which he criticized Bud Siliga’s refusal to reconsider the judge’s decision. Usually, Olberman in the program shows a list of the three “Worst”, in the same three places went to Siliga, since “only he can today be the Worst person”. Olberman led the decision of the American League president Lee MacFels in the famous 1983 incident involving George Bret , when the judge’s decision was reversed by the leadership of the league. In the program, the moderator discussed the incident with Governor Granholm and documentary filmmaker Ken Burns [3] .
The day after the game, at the Tigers ceremony, General Motors presented Galarrage with the 2010 red Chevy Corvette Grand-Sport convertible, paying tribute to his outstanding performance on and off the pitch. GM North America president Mark Reuss said that the way the pitcher behaved in this situation was worthy of respect. [36] Galarraga also received the “Medal of Reason” from John Stewart on Rally to Restore Sanity and / or Fear [37] . July 14, 2010 at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, Joyce and Galarraga jointly presented the ESPY Award in the Best Moment nomination, which was won by a goal scored by Landon Donovan in the US national team vs Algeria game at the 2010 World Cup [38] .
Book and rule changes in Major League Baseball
Armando Galarraga and Jim Joyce, together with Daniel Peisner, wrote a book called “Nobody's Perfect”, in which they shared their vision of the match and what happened after it [39] [10] . In June 2011, a year after the almost perfect game, the Major League Baseball released a rule stating that Joyce cannot judge a game in which the Galarragi team takes part [40] . Due to the release of the book, both participants in those events became business partners and their relationship could influence Joyce’s decisions during the game. The league also imposed such restrictions on Judge Jim Wolfe , who was barred from judging matches involving his younger brother Randy [39] .
