ClassificationAlthough historically the Coiban howler is regarded as a separate species, studies of its mitochondrial DNA have shown that it may be a subspecies of the Colombian howler . [2] The reason for considering it a separate species is the form of the skin pattern on the limbs of this primate, different from the Colombian howler. [3]
DistributionEndemic to Panama . [four]
SubspeciesTwo subspecies are described: [5]
- Alouatta coibensis coibensis Thomas , 1902 , found on Coiba Island
- Alouatta coibensis trabeata Lawrence, 1933 , occurs on the Asuero Peninsula
Alouatta coibensis coibensis is smaller than other howlers of Central America, its hair is duller than that of Alouatta coibensis trabeata .
