The so-called Maurach Castle is a complex of baroque buildings on the shores of Lake Constance in the community of Uldingen-Mühlhofen (Birnau district) in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg . Moreover, the name “castle” is, in essence, misleading, since Maurach has never been a noble residence, but is a farmstead of the former imperial monastery of Salem .

Historical Review
For the first time, the buildings (port and granary) at this place were mentioned in writing in 1155.
The courtyard acquired its present-day representative appearance after 1722 under the abbot Stefan I Jung (in the post 1698-1725), and included the abbot's residential complex, chapel , outbuildings and a garden. At the same time, only the personnel necessary for processing the surrounding vineyards were constantly accommodated in the complex. On the other hand, many abbots of Salem Monastery preferred Maurach as their summer residence. In addition, the estate was used as a transshipment point for goods arriving or departing along the lake; and in this sense, Maurach played a very important role in the economic life of the abbey, since road duties were not levied on objects transported here.
As a result of mediation , in November 1804, Maurach, as part of the monastic possessions of Salem, was taken over by the Baden Margraves .
In 1919, Maurach, together with the nearby pilgrimage church of Birnau , was bought by the Cistercian abbey of Wettingen-Mererau from Bregenz .
After a devastating fire in February 1979, Maurach was sold to the state L-Bank ( Landeskreditbank Baden-Württemberg - Förderbank ), which it still owns.
Modern usage
In 1985-1992. the castle was restored and modernized by the architect Heinz Mohl (German: Heinz Mohl ), and since then it has been used for business conferences and as a center of excellence.
