History

The basilica was built in 1831-1837 by the architect Jozsef Hild . The temple was built on the site of the historic Eger Cathedral, which was converted into a mosque during Turkish rule, and in 1820 the extremely dilapidated building was demolished. In 1827, the Eger archdiocese was headed by a prominent church figure, Archbishop Janos Pirker , who was the main initiator of the construction of a large basilica. In May 1837, the new cathedral was consecrated [1] . In 1970, she was awarded the honorary status of a small basilica [2] .

Architecture

Facade of the Basilica

The Cathedral represents in plan a three-nave basilica with a transverse transept . The length of the cathedral is 93 meters, width - 53 meters. Above the middle cross is a high dome on a drum . The main bell towers of the cathedral of 55 meters high are located in the corners of the building, behind the apse . The main facade in the Greek style is decorated with a six - columned portico , consisting of 17-meter Corinthian columns [1] . On the pediment is an inscription in Latin “Venite adoremus Dominum” (Come, worship the Lord). On the sides of the stairs leading to the main facade, there are four statues: the apostles Peter and Paul, Saints Stephen and Laszlo. The interior of the cathedral is decorated in the Baroque style, work on improving the interior continued for many years after the opening of the cathedral. The main marble altar was created at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the frescoes in the altar.

The original 52-register organ of the XIX century has been preserved in the cathedral; in 2000, it was restored.
