Biography
The younger brother of academician V.A. Chereshnev . In 1971 he graduated from Perm University (now PSNIU) with a degree in ichthyology.
Since 1972 - in the laboratory of ichthyology and hydrobiology of the Biological and Soil Institute of the Far Eastern Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR . In 1982 he defended his work for the degree of candidate of biological sciences - “Freshwater ichthyofauna of Eastern Chukotka and its origin in connection with the problem of Beringia.”
Since 1982 - at the Institute of Biological Problems of the North , in 1983 he organized a group of ichthyology (later became a laboratory). In 1992 he defended his doctoral dissertation "Freshwater fish of the North-East of Asia: fauna, systematics, history of settlement."
In 1985 he became a member of the Joint Council for Biological Sciences and the Scientific and Publishing Council of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences; since 1990, he has been a member of the International Scientific Society "Fanatics of the Arctic Loach" , since 1998 - member of the Atlantic Division of the American Ichthyological Society.
In May 2003, he was elected a corresponding member of the Department of Biological Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences (specialty "hydrobiology"). In 2004, he was appointed chairman of the North-East Scientific Center of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In May 2005, at the General Meeting of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, he was elected Director of the Institute of Biological Problems of the North.
He led many Russian and international research projects ( RFBR , Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Biological Diversity, World Ocean, International Science Foundation), was an expert at the Committee for Natural Resources of the Magadan Region and a participant in environmental assessments of a number of major projects related to hydraulic engineering, development of mineral deposits, artificial breeding of salmon fish, member of the Coordination Council for Innovation under the Governor of the Magadan Region.
Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation .
Scientific activity
The main direction is systematics, biogeography, the history of the fauna and ecology of freshwater fish in Northeast Asia. He first developed original theories of the formation of the freshwater ichthyofauna of Beringa and the Far East as a whole, proposed a new biogeographic zoning scheme for the territories of Eastern Siberia and Alaska.
Scientists discovered and described new taxa of freshwater and marine fish, published identifiers and catalogs of ichthyofauna, made broad generalizations regarding regional ichthyology, various issues of population biology, conservation of biodiversity, and rational use of fish resources. Together with his colleagues, for the first time in Russian ichthyology, he launched extensive research on the molecular systematics and phylogeny of fish groups dominating the ichthyofauna of the Far Eastern seas.
