Biography

Apostolos Mavrogenis was born in January 1792 in a noble family of the island of Paros . The Greco-Venetian genus of the Mavrogenis originates from the island of Crete . Due to their education, many representatives of the Mavrogenis clan held high positions in the Ottoman Empire. Other members of the Mavrogenis clan made a significant contribution to the modern Greek education.
The Apostle was the third child (out of ten) in the family of Yannis Mavrogenis and Zambeto Condily.
When the Apostle was still a child, due to Turkish persecution, the family of Yannis Mavrogenis left the island of Paros and moved to the island of Lesbos . For greater security, the Apostle was sent to his uncle, Stefanos Mavrogenis (1750-1821), who at that time was the Ottoman ambassador in Vienna . Subsequently and with the beginning of the Greek Revolution , Stefanos Mavrogenis himself was beheaded by the Turks during the mass terror directed against the Orthodox Greek population.

Finding himself in favorable conditions, the Apostolos received a substantial education. He completed his education in the Italian Pisa , where he studied medicine. In addition to Greek, the Apostle spoke French, Arabic, Turkish and Italian. The Greek Revolution broke out in 1821, when the Apostle Mavrogenis was still in Italy. Without delay, the Apostle left the university and, with 7 of his Italian comrades, volunteered for rebellious Greece. Here he joined the famous commander T. Kolokotronis and took part in the defeat of the Turkish forces under Dervenakia .

During the War of Independence, professional physicians in the ranks of the rebellious Greeks were extremely rare and for the most part belonged to the number of foreign phyllins . The medical services of revolutionary Greece were inadequate and, as a rule, death was inevitably followed by severe wounds on the battlefield. By virtue of this, persons who possessed even the minimum knowledge and skills of medicine had great authority among the Greek rebels.
Under these conditions, the contribution of Mavrogenis was so valuable and universally recognized that when John Kapodistrias arrived in Greece, Mavrogenis was appointed the first military doctor to the first military hospital on the island of Salamis . When assigned to Mavrogenis, a salary of 70 “ phoenixes ” and “3 daily servings of bread” was determined.

Mavrogenis biographers write that before his appointment to the hospital he was not only a military doctor, but also a fighter. Mavrogenis was noted by the command for courage in the battle of Drampal in 1825 against the Turkish-Egyptian forces Ibrahim.

After the war ended and under the King of Bavaria, Otton , Mavrogenis was assigned a small honorary pension. Mavrogenis was awarded the Order of both Otto and King George .

Toward the end of the century, and despite his advanced age, Mavrogenis remained in his right mind and firm memory, but lost his eyesight. The Apostolos Mavrogenis gave his last interview in 1904 to journalist and writer Zacharias Papantoniou . The interview was published in the Skrip newspaper [2] .

The apostle Mavrogenis died in Athens on November 7, 1906, at the age of 114, the last of the famous veterans of the War of Independence of 1821-1829 [3] .
