History
It consists of two buildings of the Ottoman era, in one of which rich families of Egypt lived, until it was bought by a mistress from the island of Crete, as a result of which it was called "Beit El Kertlia", which means "the house of people from Crete."
In 1935, Egyptian authorities provided the home to British officer Guyer Anderson, who was a British member of the Egyptian public service in 1930-1940.
Gayer-Anderson was collecting objects of ancient Egyptian, Islamic and Central Asian art, acquired by him during his travels in the region, which later became part of the museum’s collection.
Gayer-Anderson bequeathed buildings and a collection to Egypt (he died in 1945). For such a generous gift, King Farouk granted Gayer-Anderson the title of Pasha.
