Ruth Elder ( born Ruth Elder ) (born September 8, 1902 - October 9, 1977 ) is an American female pilot [1] [2] . The first woman in history to attempt to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in an American Girl plane in 1927 . Due to an oil leak, the plane crashed into the water, not reaching 500 km to the Azores . Elder and her co-pilot George Haldeman were picked up by the Barendrecht tanker. Despite this setback, Elder made history as "Miss American Aviation."

She starred in two films - the comic melodrama "Moran of the Marines" (1928, Vivian Marshall - the main female role) and the family comedy "You Bet Your Life, 1950" (1961, played herself).
