Biography
Born on June 20, 1913 in the village of Pushkaryovka (now the Sumy region of the Sumy region of Ukraine ). After graduating from seven grades of the school, he worked at a refinery. He graduated from the rabfak at the Sumy State Pedagogical Institute, after which he worked as a teacher in the Khmelnitsky region . In January 1943 he was called up for service in the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army. Since September of that year - on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War. In one of the battles he was wounded. By July 1944, the shooter of the 433rd Infantry Regiment of the 64th Infantry Division of the 50th Army of the 2nd Belorussian Front . He distinguished himself during the crossing of the Neman [1] .
On July 14, 1944, the commander of the battalion, in which Maidan served, sent a group of fighters to the western coast of the Neman to divert the attention of German troops, and at that time successfully transport the main forces in a more favorable place. Under enemy fire, only seven people were able to get alive to the west coast in the area of the village of Lunna, Mostovsky district, Grodno region , who captured a small bridgehead and repulsed German attacks. Over the next day, the group repelled 12 counterattacks, inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. In that battle, Kalinin was injured, but continued to fight, destroying 25 enemy soldiers and officers. The participants of that battle Osinny , Sheremet , Nichepurenko , Kalinin , Solopenko , Sukhin and Maidan were presented to the ranks of Heroes of the Soviet Union. February 10, 1945 Maidan died in a battle near Budapest .
He was buried in a mass grave in a cemetery in the town of Kishkunlakhazha 24 kilometers south of Budapest [1] .
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of March 24, 1945, for the courage and heroism shown when crossing the Neman and holding the bridgehead on its western shore, Private Mark Stepanovich was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the award of the Order of Lenin and the Golden Star medal.

In honor of Maidan, a bust was installed in his native village and a memorial sign in the village of Veliky Zhvanchik , where he worked as a teacher before the war [1] .
