He began to engage in wrestling as a teenager in his hometown. In 1946 he moved to Budapest, and in 1950 to Honved. He trained under the guidance of coach Lajos Kerestes and Mihai Matura. In 1951 he became the champion of Hungary and took second place in the youth world championship in Berlin in the Greco-Roman wrestling. At the Summer Olympics in Helsinki (1952) he won a bronze medal in freestyle wrestling.

At the World Championships in Tokyo (1954) he became the sixth, and at the World Championships in Karlsruhe (1955), speaking in the Greco-Roman wrestling, he won a silver medal, losing only to the Soviet wrestler Givi Kartosia . At his second Olympic Games in Melbourne (1956) he took fifth place, again losing to Cartesia.

At the world championship in Budapest (1958) in the Greco-Roman wrestling, he again won silver, losing to the Soviet wrestler Rostom Abashidze . At his third Olympics in Rome (1960) he took only eighth place in freestyle wrestling competitions. However, he achieved his most significant success a year later, at the World Championships in Japanese Yokohama (1961), winning the title of light heavyweight world champion in Greco-Roman style.
