Biography
John Phillips
Born December 25, 1800 in Wiltshire in a family of Welsh descent.
He lost his parents in childhood and was brought up by an uncle, a famous geologist William Smith , who instilled in his nephew a love of paleontology and stratigraphy.
In 1859-1860 he was president of the Geological Society of London .
In 1865, he was president of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
