Biography

It comes from the Alevite community. He graduated from the medical faculty of the University of Damascus , joined the Baath Party and fought as a field doctor in the Algerian war as part of the National Liberation Front) against the French colonial power. After the Ba'ath party came to power in Syria, he held a number of important government posts:

  • 1963-1964 - Minister of Health
  • September-December 1965 - Minister of Foreign Affairs in the socialist cabinet of Yusuf Zueyin .
  • 1966-1968 - Again, the Minister of Foreign Affairs in Zueyin’s second cabinet. He belonged to the "left" wing of the "Baathists", whose popularity fell significantly after the defeat in the Six Day War ,
  • 1968 - transferred to the Ministry of Agriculture, however, under pressure from Hafez al-Assad, he was dismissed,
  • 1968-1970 - Member of the Bureau, member of the regional command of the Baath Council.

After the 1970 coup and the assumption of power by President Assad, he was thrown into prison. Then he was released and since 1971 he lived in exile in Algeria. Together with a number of other disgraced politicians, he created the Bass Democratic Socialist Party, which actively participated in the protest movement in the 1980s and 2000s. He supported the Damascus Declaration (2005) and joined the Left Opposition National Coordinating Committee for Democratic Change , however, he had no connections with the rebels who have been waging an armed struggle against President Bashar al-Assad since 2011.
