Biography

Early life and career

Prior to his film career in cinema, Donald McAlpin was a physical education teacher in Parks, New South Wales. He began using a 16mm camera to shoot athletes preparing for the Melbourne Olympics .

Macalpin's early career in Australia found him in collaboration with other great Australian filmmakers from 1972-1981. In particular, with Bruce Beresford . McAlpin made many of Beresford's early films, including The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie, Barry Mackenzie Keeps Everything to Him, Don Party, Getting Wisdom, Money Movement, Morant Buster, and Club. McAlpin also worked with another great Australian filmmaker, Gillian Armstrong , in the movie My Diamond Career.

After three of Macalpin’s films were released in New York, My Diamond Career, Buster Morant, and Getting Wisdom, director Paul Mazursky noticed Makalpin’s work and offered him a chance to go to Greece to work on his film "Storm". After successful filming, work in the United States began to seek its way to Makalpin.

Work on Famous Films

McAlpin also shot some of the most famous and was nominated for an Oscar for his visually stunning film Moulin Rouge! He is a member of the Australian Cinema Society and the American Society of Cameramen . ASC awarded him the 2009 International Achievement Award. [one]
