Life

The main source of information about the life of Philomena is the "Revelation" of the nun Maria Louise di Gesu (1799-1875) - according to legend, the saint appeared to the nun in a vision and ordered her to tell people the story of her martyrdom. According to tradition, Filomena is considered to be a native of Corfu , who comes from a local ruling family; at the age of 13, she decided to devote her life to Jesus . Father Filomena, together with his family, came to Rome to negotiate with the emperor Diocletian , who threatened war with his possessions. Given that Corfu had been part of the Roman Empire by that time for 500 years, Diocletian could not in any way threaten the war of his own province; apparently, the conditional date is 302/304. they took according to the time of Diocletian's persecution of Christians. Fascinated by Philomena, the emperor invited her to become his wife, but she refused, mindful of her vow . By order of Diocletian, Philomena was subsequently subjected to flagellation and drowning in the Tiber , she was also shot by archers, but every time she remained unharmed with angelic help, and was eventually beheaded. Due to the nature of the torment suffered, portrayed with an anchor and arrow.

It was canonized in 1837 by Pope Gregory XVI by publishing the papal [1] . However, such a procedure was criticized by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith during the presidency of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger , the future Pope [2] [3] .
